Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Rafuse.
Cheryl, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Howl Content started as a marketing and copywriting freelance company and to some extent, it still is. I was working with small businesses and one-person shows that needed a little extra support. I found that the most enjoyable and valuable parts for me and my clients were some of the discovery sessions we completed together. After those sessions I was always able to better understand their direction and personal truths. It made it easier to create quality creative work for them.
I loved digging into their vision and really getting to the truth of their message. I kept feeling like I wanted to combine these sessions with some of my other skills as an intuitive and Reiki practitioner. I felt like my knowledge and ability to read energy might help people figure out their most authentic creative routes. Then I could help translate those needs and wants into real actionable marketing steps. I recently launched my Energy Healing for Business sessions at the HausWitch Healing Space that include things like Brand Alignment and Manifestation Marketing. These are things I’ve been doing without the energy healing and tarot portion, and adding that intuitive piece feels like I’ve completed a puzzle.
Has it been a smooth road?
I started doing small side projects for people several years ago while I was still in more traditional marketing roles at companies in Boston. I worked for a couple different places, but nothing ever really seemed like the right fit. I was laid off from a position that I thought was going to set me on a new, more creatively focused path. It was discouraging at first, but thankfully that lay-off was exactly the fire I needed under my ass to get Howl Content going.
I began working part-time at HausWitch, a modern metaphysical boutique, and started working on a new website and finding clients. I put my knowledge from past internships at startups, my marketing degree, my last (failed!) startup into practice in a way that I hadn’t been able to while working for large companies. It was ultimately very freeing. I can tell that working alongside a bunch of entrepreneurs and passionate creative is where I thrive at this point. I’m still building my client base, but I like to work sustainably, so I’m in no rush to take on projects that don’t jive with my vision. Sometimes that means making tough calls, but so far it’s paid off!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Howl Content – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My aim with Howl Content is to start my relationship with clients by providing them with a space to analyze their business and messaging in a way they haven’t thought of before. I specialize in helping people find their true voice. I work with small business owners, professional busy people, and artists. I believe that when someone sets out on a path in their career, it should be aligned with their truth and passion. A writer at heart, I can teach clients how to talk about their expertise in a way that will bring them closer to their business and clients.
As far as I know, I’m the only person who’s focusing energy healing on business and career in quite this way. I think we neglect ourselves when we start a company or new job because it becomes all about survival. Instead of your dream career or company, you start building your own nightmare—and you aren’t even sure how that happened. Sometimes you just need to take a breath and realign your growth goals with your real-life goals. Howl helps with that realignment and then works to create the content or marketing plan to get you where you want and need to be.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Moving out to Salem has been the best decision for me and my business. There’s a thriving creative community here. I’ve met some of the best people here from passionate activists to movers and shakers in many different industries and places. I love hanging out at the newly minted Counter at the Hotel Salem and spend many a morning grabbing coffee at the Ugly Mug or Front Street Coffeehouse. Between the rose garden behind the Ropes Mansion, the ocean views, and the phenomenal exhibits they’ve had recently at the Peabody Essex Museum, there is no want for inspiration here.
Salem is where the magic happens. We have good food, the beach, a city full of badass witches—not sure I’d ever want to be anywhere else!
