Meet Britny Savary-Bersani in Lowell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britny Savary-Bersani.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Like many other artists, I was also into being creative as a child and young adult. In high school, I really only thrived in the courses that were art related. This led me to pursue fine art as my focus when applying to colleges. I then began to explore mixed-media in my first year of undergraduate study at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. I was unsure of what major to stick with, so I bounced around between photography, printmaking and painting. I ultimately decided to divulge my own path and pursue an Interdisciplinary Arts curriculum in order to expose myself to as many media as possible prior to graduation. I began to find my own style and techniques late into my junior year of study, which led me to create a final body of work that showcased printmaking, acrylic painting, image transfers and encaustic painting.

After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2012, I remained local, interned at a few galleries and began to exhibit work in group shows. After about a year, I moved to Massachusetts to further pursue my artwork personally and professionally. In 2015, I had my first solo show in Lowell which proved resourceful in gaining clients who wanted commissions and custom work. I have been working to expand myself as a business while still exhibiting work in group shows with my peers, as well as developing personal projects such as a collage series I am currently working on.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not, I don’t think anyone has a really easy time as a creative person trying to pursue a career or achieve work/life balance. My main challenge is typically trying to find a perfect balance between financial stability and doing what I love. These things are not synonymous with one another by any means and I think that’s true for most people. Another balance, I’ve recently been challenged with is family/personal life balance and maintaining a relevant presence on social media for the sake of my business. For example, this year I recently got married and we are expecting our first child in early October. In my opinion, women are faced with a lot of challenges and scrutiny as professionals, when we add family dynamics into the mix it can be even more difficult to be seen as artists first.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Britny Savary-Bersani – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is myself, my work is the product. I make mixed-media paintings that are primarily large scale and on wood panels. This is what I am known for I suppose. I am proud of my work mostly because I’ve managed to create a business out of something entirely my own, and yet still enjoy. I make abstract/ mixed-media work, I don’t really compromise on that fact regardless of whether it would make my brand more accessible or not. For example, if someone asked me to paint a portrait of their family member for a fee; I would politely decline. It’s just not the work I do or the work I’d want to do. What sets me apart is the culmination of my creativity coupled with technical ability gained from making a lot of mistakes. I try many things that simply don’t work and I just keep it moving.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I think Boston is unique in the way that there’s honestly something for everyone. I have had the fortune of meeting some really inspiring people here and that’s a large part of it. Boston is unlike other big cities in the way that anyone can feel at home here. For what I enjoy least, I’m going to give the standard New Englander answer and say ‘”the winters suck.”
