Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Runnals.
Brian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Postfly was born in my basement out of the frustration of being an ‘urban angler’ and not having easy ways to get the gear I needed – a frustration shared by many of our customers. The internet offered little help so I set out on a mission to fix it… 5 years later here we are! We’ve got customers in virtually every fishing town in the USA, partners all over the world and an amazing community to support it all.
Our goal since the beginning was to deliver a complete package of everything you need to be successful on the water. A tremendous amount of work goes into this vision month after month!
Has it been a smooth road?
We’ve had lots of ups and downs. I’ve had great employees leave (which sucks BTW). I’ve also made bad hires and had to fix those situations quickly, which is tough. But it’s all lead to where we are now – a best in class product/service backed by an all-star team. The journey has been super rewarding and had been an amazing learning experience.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We’re a direct-to-consumer e-commerce fishing business, and almost everything we do has a subscription model. Customers join our club and tell us what they like to fish for and we take care of the rest to deliver flies, gear, accessories and more every month. We manufacture or private label almost everything that goes into our shipments so we’ve got complete control over product quality etc., and its helped us quite a bit. We recently launched an innovative fishing rod brand (The Wade Rod Co.), with the goal of delivering high-performance rods to our customers for just a few bucks each month.
We’ve had several knock-off competitors pop up in the past 5 years. I guess people think it’s easy, I dunno. They usually last about a year before their website is dead. What people don’t see are the 80 hour weeks, sacrifices and significant investments (financial and otherwise) that it takes to pull this off!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is a great home for a startup, we were operating out of the Seaport for about 2 years. There is a tremendous amount of talent and resources for startups of all types in the area.
We’ve since moved north to Newbury, MA where we have plenty of space for our warehousing and fulfillment as well as a brick & mortar store for customer to come in and try our all of our products. It helps that we’ve also got a world-class striped bass fishery in our backyard 😉
