Meet Ben Donahue in Westford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Donahue.

Ben, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It started for me like a lot of people. I gravitated to drawing as a kid, drawing comic books at home, school, and summer camp whenever I could get the chance. This later evolved into drawing large illustrations of cities and battle scenes of imagined storylines I put together with friends and on my own free time. My creativity went away during middle school but made its way back into high school poetry, short stories and a return to my old hobby of drawing. By high school graduation, I was unsure what I wanted to do other than writing and illustrating, so I began summer classes following high school and later went on to art school for a BFA in illustration. Ever since college, I have produced illustrations and fine art portrait commissions, worked on my personal book series, and helped illustrate book covers for Books by V.S. Holmes and hope for more work in that department.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been hard! Although I had an innate focus for art, tackling school was stressful and managing relationships was a chaotic integral part of growing. There was never a dull moment, a lot of living to do, a lot of pain but a lot of lessons to learn just beyond simply becoming better at work.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ben Donahue art story. Tell us more about the business.
I currently am writing and illustrating my trilogy: Children of Yájrin, a fantasy series about a disc world, created by dargon gods, inhabited by many sentient races that are manipulated into wars over good and evil. It’s been my personal project for over 10 years. I also provide book covers and portrait art for commission.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see it taking a stronger presence on social media, involving sculpture, video, and maybe even toys.
