Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Shapiro.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My background is education. I have 2 masters’ degrees in education – one in counseling and one in special needs. I taught language impaired teenagers math until I met my husband who was a financial planner. After we married, I would to go into his office after school and help out. I became ill one summer and hadn’t recovered enough to return to school in September. I took a leave of absence for a year. My husband suggested I study for my basic securities license (Series 7) to keep myself busy. I passed the 7 and subsequently passed several other securities exams and ended up getting my CFP, CDFA, CeFT and another master’s degree in finance. Needless to say, I never went back to formally teaching but find that I use my teaching skills in explaining complex financial concepts to clients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Greater Boston is a competitive region, with all of the large multi‐national firms that have extremely deep pockets. However, we find that once clients get to know our boutique firm, they are quite pleased with the levels of service and attention they get compared to just being a number at a large brokerage house.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about HMS Financial Group – what should we know?
We are a full‐service financial planning firm. The majority of our clients are couples and individuals that want personalized service. We don’t have a minimum amount of money requirement.
I specialize in working with divorce attorneys in determining what the most advantageous division of martial property might be. I strive to make sure both parties are in the position to financially get on with their lives.
As a recent widow, I am finding that many other widows/widowers would prefer to work with someone who understands their position both emotionally and financially.
The thing that sets us apart is our ability to communicate and listen to what our clients’ needs are emotionally and financially and to construct plans and portfolios that will best meet their needs.
