Today we’d like to introduce you to Bailey Quinlan.
Bailey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I love looking at, talking about, and making photographs. As far back as I can remember, art has been a part of my soul. I took every drawing and painting class I could when I was growing up. Then I upped and moved to Boston to study Photography at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts & Tufts University, where I met my future-husband Yuta in a photo class, no less.
I started seeing the world differently- thinking and seeing critically, perceiving light in a whole new way, finding beauty in everyday things. I discovered how magical it is that because photographs are directly tied to the world we live in, EVERYONE can relate to a photograph. But at the same time, we all approach an image from different backgrounds and personal experiences, so a single image has a different meaning to every single viewer.
After graduating with a BFA, I struggled for several years with how to make a living doing what I loved. Ironically, I didn’t even believe in marriage until I myself got married- and a lightbulb went off. Being a wedding photographer just made sense- I was amazed by the opportunity to provide couples with this wonderful gift of photos of friends and loved ones they will cherish forever. And as a bonus, I can get creative and personal fulfillment from it!
Since taking the leap to become a full-time creative entrepreneur, I regularly get the chance to meet adorable couples who share their most intimate moments with me. With Yuta by my side through all of it, my daily life is a constant reminder of humanity’s limitless capacity to love. And it’s absolutely breath-taking.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been challenging, and I’m learning every single day. I think if you’re not learning, you’re not pushing yourself, and you’re not growing. I’m always striving to feel uncomfortable so I can go that much further with my passion.
Since I have a fine art background, I struggled with knowing the ins-and-outs of running a business. I knew I could do it- it was just a matter of putting in the time and energy. I’ve gotten where I am by working with other photographers, asking for help, and doing a LOT of research.
Another thing I dealt with was finding my voice and my own personal style. I always knew what I liked, but when I finally stopped caring about what other people thought I felt so much more free to pursue what I wanted and get satisfaction from my work. Being self-employed isn’t easy, but seeing your hard work pay off is so gratifying. I wouldn’t change it for the world.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am the photographer/owner of Bailey Q Photo and I specialize in intimate weddings and adventurous portrait sessions. My photographic style is naturalistic, creative, and personal. I capture candid, meaningful moments without being obtrusive so that the pictures highlight each individual’s personality.
I also know how awkward it can feel to be in front of the camera, so during portrait sessions I help put my clients at ease by keeping the mood playful and fun. My main goal is for my clients to get the most out of the session, and provide them with beautiful, memorable images they’ll love looking at together for years to come.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I started my business in Boston, and the community of photographers and other wedding professionals in the area has been overwhelmingly supportive and collaborative. It’s a small enough city that we can create a network and stay connected, but it doesn’t feel competitive because there are simply so many potential clients in the immediate area. I’ve been considering relocating, but I would be sad to leave the beautiful community here!
