Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Witkin.
Andrew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had worked at several galleries in New York but also had been working in the education departments of several museums. My mother became sick and I needed to return to Boston, so I called everyone for whom I had worked to see if anyone could help me find a job ‘back home’ and it seems everyone called Barbara Krakow. I knew her to have a similar aesthetic as to what I was interested in and also appreciated how approachable and education-minded her gallery was/is. Fast forward almost twenty years and we have had a long, dynamic, fruitful, unique and exciting partnership, with the gallery changing names this summer from Barbara Krakow Gallery (which she had founded in 1983) to Krakow Witkin Gallery.
Has it been a smooth road?
The same any small business may have!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We try to have our gallery be elegant, intelligent, forward-thinking, engaged with the past, challenging and also available to all. We put up three new exhibitions every six weeks. The work is mostly Minimal, conceptual and/or reductivist in visual aesthetic, yet the subject matter and what the art looks like can vary greatly. Most importantly, it is art that, we feel, speaks to the human condition in all its variations, intricacies and complications.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We love Boston. It is a small city in terms of population and square footage, yet it is gigantic in terms of cultural and intellectual weight. Being around all the research, investigation, learning and living is energizing and a great balance between the constantly new and the tried and true.
