Meet Alisha Hale and Taylor Kruse of The Movement Project in Acton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Hale and Taylor Kruse.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We met in Boston at a studio where we both worked temporarily and became good friends.

After a while we started dating and as things began to unfold, personally and professionally, we decided to work together on creating The Movement Project. This was almost exactly 4 years ago.

We both have backgrounds in personal training. Taylor specialized in a Russian-style of training called The Burdenko Method and is inspired by wrestling, martial arts, dance, and skill-based training. Alisha spent a lot of time learning more about how to problem solve mechanical issues and used a fascial stretching system – becoming fascinated with what causes pain and injury. As we began our career together we continued our education with a company called Zhealth Performance – a brain-based education company that takes complex neurological concepts and applies it into a training environment. The results are the most phenomenal that either of us have ever experienced in our 10 year+ careers as personal trainers.

This series of education has become the foundation of The Movement Project.

Taylor Kruse: BS in Physical Education and Health

Alisha Hale: BS in Psychology and currently in process of completing an MAc (Masters of Acupuncture) at MCPHS University

In 2018, upon Alisha’s graduation, we will be incorporating Orthopedic Acupuncture into The Movement Project.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We talk about this all the time. Nothing about being an entrepreneur is a smooth road.

Especially entrepreneurs who started their business with no savings, no loans, and no investors.

Would we do it any other way?

Absolutely not.

We consider ourselves excellent technicians who are succeeding on pure will and drive to work independently in a field that we are extremely passionate about.

We do not have any business background.

I’d say the struggles we have had were around finding our brand and teaching ourselves how to package our services and market those services to our target market.

We are so thankful for social media. It has allowed us to advertise our brand without ever actually having to budget any money towards advertising.

Please tell us about The Movement Project.
We offer brain-based fitness.

We specialize in working with people who typically fall through the cracks when it comes to full rehabilitation from injury or pain. We see people who do not have a diagnosable injury but have pain that keeps them from continuing the activities they love. We see athletes who have finished their rehab on injuries like ACL tears, nerve impingements, disc herniations, or unexplained pain and have a gap between their rehabilitated state and the current training demands of their sport – we help them close that gap so that they can truly complete their rehab. We also see people with very complex health or injury histories that would normally not feel safe with an average personal trainer – using tools to help them improve their quality of life in ways that are unexpected.

Using the same tools that we would use for our pain clients, we also use for our performance clients. For example, we have a golfer who has wrist pain because of frequently hitting the ground on the swing. Why is she hitting the ground? Based on our visual assessments, she is not seeing the ball well enough to make an accurate assessment on where the ball is in space. So, we train her vision.

What sets us apart from other personal training companies is the individualized approach. A lot of people say their approach is individualized but ours actually is. What makes it truly individualized is that we assess every single exercise we ever have the person perform. Two people presenting with very similar biomechanics and movement capabilities can and will respond very differently to the same exercise. What works for one does not work for another. We know this because we are fanatical about assessments.

What also sets us apart is using visual, vestibular (think balance), and proprioceptive training as performance enhancing tools.

What we are most proud of is the fact that we are attracting the same type of clientele that matches our drive to be the best. Every one of our clients has a dedication and appreciation for the work it takes to be successful with their health and fitness. All the blood, sweat, and tears that nobody else sees is where the magic is at.

Taylor was recently featured in Men’s Health Magazine as part of their Innovation Issue (September 2017)! They contacted Taylor because they were looking for trainers who are on the cutting-edge in the industry. Taylor chose to feature The Infinity Walk – one of our go to moves for decreasing pain, improving coordination, and drastically enhancing performance!
