Life and Work with Kimberly Russo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Russo,

Kimberly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The moment I saw Just Right Farm, I was simply captivated by the possibilities it held. The rural-ness here reminded me of my childhood in Appalachia, and it was the spirit of hospitality I learned from my mother that inspired me to create a restaurant.

The elegant comfort of this 300-year-old farmstead, with its long shady drive, huge ash trees, and the old red house, inspired stewardship… demanded attention from my heart.

There’s a sweet, palpable, human-like energy here… so much so that I named the house, “Alice”. I swear she joins in and frequently guides our decisions. I often tell our guests, “ That spirit you feel is the same welcoming energy that made us want to live our lives here.”

On a farmstead with this history, everything seems to evolve organically, with the rhythm of nature.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, to start this new venture (and adventure) at age 53, seemed daunting at the time, but not enough to stop me.

There were no restaurants in the state that offered the kind of experience that I wanted to provide, so I was concerned about getting people to come here. Seven years later, I am very happy that I trusted my gut instincts.

That is what I would advise any woman of any age to do.

Please tell us about Just Right Farm.
The cornerstone of the Just Right Farm experience is our five-course prix-fixe dinner in the screen house, June through September. We specialize in small intimate weddings, special events, private parties and providing the ideal venue for hosting retreats and workshops.

From our collaborative woman-run kitchen comes nuanced, contemporary flavors, the delicious result of our hands-on attention, from planting to plating. We actually start our Screen House dinners in February… when we decide which seeds to start in the greenhouse.

This kitchen has a penchant for bold flavors and classical interpretations, with a soft spot for a beautiful meal on a summers evening.

The most satisfying part of it all is to have our dinner guests thank me at the end of the night as though they were guests at a dinner party in my home… and in a sense they are. I do live here after all.

As a chef, farmer, restauranteur, and woodworker, I literally have a hand in everything; from the food on the plate to the tables, it is served on, to the florals around the room… my hand is my brand!

Who have you been inspired by?
I get something out everything I see and hear, from what to do as well as what not to do.
