Life and Work with Jessie Dillon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Dillon.

Jessie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
So, my journey in the beauty world began in cosmo school. I was so sure that I wanted to do hair, but wound up falling in love with skincare. That passion lead me to an educator role with Sephora, where I found ANOTHER new passion for cosmetics! Educating teams large and small for Sephora was a great experience. I worked with about 100 vendors, trained countless employees, worked with an insane number of brands. But after 5 years, it was time for a new challenge. I dove into the esthetics world with lash extensions. Lashing takes such patience and perfectionism, and yields such a gorgeous result that truly impacts people’s self esteem! I know, because I’m addicted to my own lashes. Enabling people to wake up feeling pretty is huge and branching out into permanent makeup was an extension of that. Permanent makeup isn’t as popular as lash extensions, but I feel that’s because many women don’t know it’s an option! A painless, natural-looking, customizable option. Now, this all started as a side gig! When my passion for brows and lashes began to outweigh my passion for education, I knew it was time to part ways with Sephora and create Jessie Dillon Beauty. I feel like I’ve been on vacation since settling into my host studio, Pretty Things PVD, because this truly does not feel like work. Giving clients confidence, happy tears, fearlessness, freedom from everyday makeup… that’s not business, that’s pleasure.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, it’s been a road full of self-doubt! I think opening a business and excelling in an artistic field are two things that really test you. There have been, and sometimes still are, moments when I worry that self-employment is too risky. There have been lots of moments when I’ve said: “wow, I can’t measure up to this artist or that artist…” One of my acquaintances and clients, Paula Hoss of the natural skincare brand CLN&DRTY, posted a diagram once. It was a chart with lots of ups and downs and said something like “the thought process of a small business owner.” When it dawned on me that I wasn’t alone in the self-doubt and worrying and second guessing, I knew it was going to be okay. If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be on my own, doing something I love, having total control over my own success, I wouldn’t have believed you. But, YOU are your only real obstacle. If you want it, you’ll find a way.

Please tell us about Jessie Dillon Beauty.
So, JDB offers permanent makeup for the brows, lips, and freckles, as well as lash extensions and bridal/event makeup. I’m definitely busiest with permanent makeup, as I really have my own style that sets me apart. Not many permanent makeup artists in MA/RI offer Ombré Brows, my most popular PMU service. Rather than just having the hair strokes that microblading creates, Ombré Brows are a soft powdery “fill” of diluted color, to imitate brow powder… that you wake up with. This service has really changed the game, as the ever-popular microblading isn’t always the right fit for many clients (anyone with oily/combo/mature/sensitive skin, anyone with uneven density, and more.) Beyond having various PMU options to fit everyone’s needs, JDB is set apart by excellence and continued education. I’m always out looking for the next opportunity to grow as an artist, and since I know my clients are walking billboards for my work, putting out top-notch quality every time is my #1 priority. The services I offer are “investment pieces” for the face… every single client deserves the absolute best.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I definitely wasn’t babied as a child! My mom had always given me tough love, the “walk it off” type. Now, when any little setback comes my way, I walk it off. Whether that be in or outside of work, bouncing back like she taught me to has gotten me farther, faster.
