Today we’d like to introduce you to Issamal Mejia.
Issamal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a mother of an immensely gifted and expressive daughter, I found myself choosing among trending children’s outfits since the day she was born. Nothing produces more excitement for me than dressing my daughter up in the latest fashion trends to showcase to the rest of the world our matching outfits of the day. Sharing a similar outfit with Ilani became a bonding experience for both of us that I wish other mothers shared. I can gladly say that I take the “mommy and me” experience very seriously and this became the motivation behind the StyleMeMomma line.
With so many compliments and praises from other mothers on my social media accounts, I became even more inspired to trailblaze the “mommy and me” experience. I wanted to do what I enjoyed the most and that was bonding with my little one through matching outfits and fashion. I created StyleMeMomma to offer a fun, trendy, and affordable kid’s fashion boutique to other mothers like myself.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was fully launching StyleMeMomma due to fear. I feared what others would think of me, failing, and even the quality of my products. I always asked myself things like: would I be able to deliver high-quality products? Would people purchase and support my brand? What if it became excessively time-consuming? After almost two years of filling my head with negative thoughts of what could happen, I, one day, found the strength within me to just go for it!
Please tell us about StyleMeMomma.
StyleMeMomma specializes in children’s accessories. At the moment, our products are mostly children’s purses and sunglasses. What sets StyleMeMomma apart is that our line is not only affordable, but my daughter herself is the face of the brand. Ilani selects the line’s accessories, names them, and even showcases our products on our social media accounts. It is a line that fully represents children’s fashion where children are involved in every part of the decision process.
What are you most proud of so far? I am very proud and grateful for the support we have received. I gained 200+ followers on Instagram within a few days of launching the StyleMeMomma website. In fact, I chose a delivery date recently for all my local Boston customers that wanted to make a purchase before the website went live and sold over 30 pieces. I have even received the support of established Instagram bloggers that have agreed to help promote my business and I could not be any more thankful.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Advice to others embarking on this journey? If you’re passionate about it, just go for it! Trust me, I know it may sound scary to take on such a risk, but will you ever know if you don’t try? Every day has become a learning experience for me and my brand. I will say that making errors is an innate part of the journey as a new business owner but asking questions and creating a supportive network is key to success.
