Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Sage.
Amber, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out with art, when I was growing up, I found solace in creating something and expressing myself through painting and fashion. As I grew older, I became more interested in makeup and turning makeup into a form of art. In a way, sometimes, I feel like I was influenced a lot by goth subcultures that I was involved in my youth, I was always more drawn to unconventional beauty.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am someone who has struggled with suicidal thoughts for over a decade. I have been diagnosed with both major depression and borderline personality disorder. Something you should know is that 80% of people with a borderline personality disorder will attempt suicide in their lifetimes. The death rate from suicide within that is 10%.
Though I’m better than I was when I was younger, this was not an easy year for me, and at one point I really thought there were no more reasons for me to stay alive. People had seen me at my lowest and kicked me while I was down, knowing that I was in a fragile place mentally. I was pushed over the edge and had given up completely. To put it simply, my actions could have literally killed me and at that point that was my plan, I didn’t care about being alive anymore. I had nothing left.
The point is, no matter how much you dislike someone, you never know what they’re dealing with. Think about what effect your words have on others, and about the fact that how you treat other people is what they will remember you for. Be kind and understanding. Tell people you love them (if you mean it). Appreciate everyone while they’re here.
Please tell us about Fairytears.
I am an esthetician and a makeup artist, and I do vocals in my band, K.K. Slider. Right now, I work at a spa and do freelancing with makeup and brand sponsorships and reviews (on my Instagram) as side gigs. I specialize in makeup, particularly glam makeup. I do other services as well such as facials, waxing, lash lifting, lash extensions, and spray tanning. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I’m still pretty young, I actually just turned 20 a few days ago. I’m most proud of the fact that despite how many people have doubted me throughout my life, I have managed to get to a point in my life where I have a fulfilling career that I love, that pushes me to do better and improve.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
The most important piece of advice I can give you is to take what people say with a grain of salt and to trust your own instincts. You are the only person in charge of your happiness and your future.
