Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Banks.
Morgan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my journey in the beauty industry about a decade ago. I went to cosmetology school and had a main focus on hair color and makeup artistry. As time went on, I found myself craving more knowledge about ingredients and skincare. I went back to school for advanced aesthetics and really found my stride. I now work in the safer beauty space, which focuses on cleaner and less toxic options. This includes safe naturals and safe synthetics, avoiding any ingredients that can be harmful to our bodies or the environment. I do freelance as well as work for an amazing clean beauty pioneer, Credo. My main goal is providing clients with the knowledge of what works for their skin and showing them that natural makeup doesn’t have to be boring.
Has it been a smooth road?
The beauty industry can be tough, especially when starting out, and I don’t think schools prepare you for the struggles that you will find along the way. There are so many options out there, and at first, I struggled to find out where my passions really lie. If you aren’t passionate, you won’t last, and that huge salary that was promised you in school will never be a reality. If there is any advice I have for anyone out there starting their journey, it is to work hard for what you want and never settle. If you settle, you will never see the full potential of your career and it can leave you jaded. You should also never be afraid to change your path, that’s what I did and I couldn’t be happier with my choice.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Clean Beauty by Morgan story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in safer, cleaner beauty. The industry is ever evolving, but the main idea is avoiding ingredients that could harm our bodies (Carcinogens, hormone disrupters, irritants) and also be minimizing environmental impact. Our skin is our largest organ, and I’m all about treating it like the valuable commodity it is. This earth is the only one we’ve got, so minimizing the harm we do is essential. I do makeup as well as makeup lessons, all using safer, natural, and often organic products. I also offer skin care consultations and love helping people navigate the products that are out there to find what truly works for them. I’m a bit of an ingredient nerd, and I love giving clients the information they need to get excited about skincare.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
For a very long time, beauty has surprisingly been a male-led field. Most big companies have been owned by men. Men deciding what products to sell us, how much money we should spend on those products, without thought of what ingredients are in them or what we truly want. I am happy to say, especially in the clean beauty world, that has changed a lot. I would say most of the makeup brands I use are female owned. Women are really taking back the beauty industry and it is very exciting to see. There are tons of small indie brands run by women who are real trailblazers, shaking up the industry.
