Conversations with the Inspiring Krista Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Johnson.

Krista, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hey there! I have been singing since I was basically born. When I was two, I got up on my grandmother’s kitchen table and made the prayer my mother used to say to me into a song. So, if that wasn’t telling, I don’t know what is.

Since then, I’ve been part of choruses and such but never wanted to truly shine. Fast toward to when I was about 27-28, I purchased my first full-sized guitar. I started lessons and songs started pouring out of me. Much to my surprise since I was trying to find someone to play guitar FOR me while I sang cover songs! In rapid succession, I was gigging out and creating my first album “Hindsight” which was recorded at On Deck Studio in Northfield, CT.

I went through the stage fright and still have it sometimes but rarely. I still have a mild fear of “not being good enough” but I keep pushing through. My voice must be heard! I am now in the middle of creating my second creation; the “Salt and Soil” EP up in Burlington Vermont at Studio 150.

You can find me on Facebook (Krista Johnson Music), Instagram (kristajohnsonmusic), Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, Bandcamp and Google Play.

I appreciate you reading this far! And I hope you enjoy my music. 🙂

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, smooth road? Yes and also NOT. AT. ALL. I was once told that since I was blonde and pretty people would not take me seriously if I only had a few chords in my songs. 😐 Yeah. By a man, sadly. One that I was working closely with.

I absolutely was supported by following music growing up but for whatever reason, I believed I was not able to. I still sometimes believe it! 😛 But when it’s such a burning desire you CANNOT and SHOULD not ever stuff it down. Trust me, if it wants to come out, it will. The feminine is rising and with come MASSIVE responsibility and CREATIVITY. A woman is made to be creative, own that, baby! No matter how hard it is. 💕

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Krista Johnson story. Tell us more about the business.
Well, some say I’m folk. In comparison to Gregory Alan Isakov and Iron and Wine (my FAVES!), I would say I’m not sure. I invite you to check it out and decide for yourselves 😉

My guitar playing and overall songwriting are pretty gentle. I am working towards creating more upbeat material, but if it wants to come out, it’s going to. Everything has a home.

My voice is my strong point and my uniqueness. Where my guitar playing might seem like others, my voice stands out from the rest and I love and am thankful for it.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Hmmm. Well, as I mentioned before, the Feminine is rising! We are taking a patriarchal society and bringing back into the hands of women. Not that men aren’t wonderful and important, but women have a gentleness and compassion to them that is simply innate. There is a reason we call the planet ‘Mother Earth’.

In the business of music, I love male and female singers, alike. Female’s, again, tend to have a gentleness to them and I find myself gravitate towards female-led groups or solo performers when it comes to meditation or relaxation. As for art, everyone is creative, it’s just a matter of tapping into it. Women, however, are more inclined towards it because our bodies create. We are creators of life. We are fluid, smooth and soft. If only we hone in, we can do so much. And, given the level-headedness and incredible problem-solving skills of women, I feel like anything could be done by them. Same with men. If we all embodied our masculine and feminine sides, the world could be a really happy, balanced place for us all.
