Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Garcia.
Kelsey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a small business owner, of K. Garcia Productions; which specializes in photography, videography, and social media marketing. I started K. Garcia Productions (KGP) when I was a senior in high school, April 2012, as just a videography company. I was only 17 and had no idea how far it would take me. In May of 2012 my best friend asked me to take his senior portrait, I had no intention of starting a photography business then. I agreed because I had a DSLR and was familiar with composition, and was a photographer for the yearbook, but I didn’t think they would be anything special. The photos were amazing. I was happy with them, my friend was happy with them, and I wanted to photograph more. So I dove into learning more about photography, and started offering senior portrait sessions.
It totally worked out since then because of my camera I’ve had the opportunity to meet many people, including Flo Rida, Jesse McCartney, Marshmello, Sabrina Carpenter, Twenty-One Pilots, and so many more. Because of all the blessings I’ve had I’ve also given back to my community, donating time to photograph including: Miss Inspirational a program for women with disabilities, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol County, the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts, and so much more.
Has it been a smooth road?
I find that if they’re aren’t struggles along the way you’re not reaching far enough, trying hard enough, working to your highest potential. So yes, there’s been many struggles, where I have put too much on my plate. Last summer I published a book about textile manufacturing in the South Coast region of Massachusetts (Fall River and New Bedford) because both of those cities were once textile capitals of the world, and clearly aren’t any more so I wanted to highlight the history and show the communities that there was hope for the future. I have myself a deadline I wanted it released on July 25, 2017, I really love the number 25, but to do that I needed to get everything done much earlier. So I stayed up very late for a week to get it all done in time; but I did it.
I’d like to tell other young women that you are capable of so much, don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t do something because you are young, or you are a woman, because that just wrong.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into K. Garcia Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
In the photography field specifically, K. Garcia Productions is known for photographing pageants, weddings, and content for small businesses, all three are very different styles, but I made sure to perfect all three. I think what makes me and K. Garcia Productions different is personality, the experience to work with us if very energetic and fun, and we’re always striving to try something new, do something different, and not just have an Instagram feed of the same style of photos.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Many women have inspired me, first my mother, working in an industry (automotive repair) that is male dominated is mind blowing to me. Both of my grandmothers are amazing women, raising families that do what they want, accomplish their goals, and make new ones. I want to take traits from both of them when I “grow up”. Lastly, as narcissistic as it sounds I inspire myself, because each time I try something new, or do something different, in business, in photography, or in my personal life, I walk out saying “wow I just did that! How cool?” I feel everyone should be inspired by themselves, let yesterday’s you push you for today!
