Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Roberge.
Jocelyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started cosmetology school soon after high school. It was the only thing I could really imagine myself doing when it came to my career. I went to Lowell Academy in Lowell Massachusetts. After that, I got the opportunity to work as a hair assistant at Bella Vita Salon. I didn’t really understand what being an assistant was all about. I really just wanted to get on the floor and get my hands in some hair. Luckily for me, things didn’t pan out that way. For a few years, I decided to work under a master stylist as well as all the other stylist at the salon instead of taking on my own clients right away. I washed hair, applied toners, and set up clients, but that’s where I really learned what school couldn’t teach me. It really taught me how to communicate with clients and understand what they were looking for. I also got to come up with my own special ways of doing things by learning from everyone else and continuing my education by going to any and every class ever offered to me. I really don’t think I would be as confident and passionate as I am now had I not taken the route I did. It took me out of my shell and I am grateful for all the experiences.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was definitely not a smooth road, I started out incredibly shy and anxious. With every client, my hands would shake and my voice would tremble. But with every interaction, I grew more confident and with that my skills also improved. I still have my struggles and will continue to learn but that is what I find so great about being a hairdresser with every mistake is a new opportunity to be better than I was before.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Bella vita salon and day spa story. Tell us more about the business.
I do just about everything in the salon such as Cutting, Coloring, formal styles, smoothing treatments and extensions. my real passion is in color. I love creating all kinds of looks from funky to more natural. There are so many techniques I enjoy using, my main one being balayage. Free painting the hair really brings out my inner artist, it allows me to create something that can’t be duplicated.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Many women have inspired me in life. I admire hard working women, especially in this industry. I think its amazing how someone can make a name for themselves and be incredibly successful by doing what they love and making other people feel their best. We all start from the same place. its really up to you in this business to become successful no one can just give it to you. Some women that I look up to are Larisa Love @larisadoll, Olivia Smalley @omgartistry, and Jamie Sea @prettylittleombre. I learned a lot from these ladies although I have never met them and aspire to be just like them and many more.
