Conversations with the Inspiring Amy Hincman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Hincman.

Amy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started with a Moms-Night-Out! I am a mother to two adorably wild little boys and a part-time mental health counselor. I decided that I wanted to take up a hobby, something just for me, so I turned to Google. I have always loved flowers, and thought it may be fun to take a class, I typed in “floral arrangement class” and Alice’s Table’s website popped up.

Alice’s Table was everything I was looking for plus cocktails! I went to the event with a girlfriend and we had the best time! At the event Alice, yes “the” Alice, was teaching that night. We got to talking afterwards and she told me that they have an Event Exec program where women can have their own small business, make your own hours and host fun events just like the one I attended. I emailed Alice the very next day and signed up!

That was back in March 2017 and since then, I have been able to stop working part-time as a counselor and be a full-time stay-at-home mom and event exec. I have collaborated with other brilliant female entrepreneurs, such as Aime Pope from The Painted Pastry and the ladies from Sip & Script. Alice’s Table has given me the platform to partner with local small businesses that support the community like Olives & Grace, Urban Grape and The Cheese Shop of Salem as well as amazing restaurants and shops like Gaslight Lynnfield, Bastille Kitchen, Seasons 52 and Paper Source to name a few.

Being part of a community that empowers women and teaches them a new skill is so fulfilling. You can convey so much with flowers; love, friendship, sympathy, joy and I get to be a part of that. I help bring a little bit of beauty into the lives of some pretty amazing people that come to my events and I’m so grateful for that.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Deciding to leave my part-time counseling job and become a full-time Event Exec was a huge, scary, exciting leap! As an Event Exec you book your own venues and are responsible for selling your own tickets and there is no guarantee. You may get 10 “no” before you get a “yes” or your event may only sell a few tickets. It can feel discouraging at times, but then you get that big event that sells out and it’s an amazing feeling!

I’m very fortunate that Alice’s Table has an amazing support system to help me on my journey. The team at corporate is fantastic and there for any questions, I may have. Then there is the group of other execs across the country to help inspire and cheer you on. My advice for others is to go for it, find a support circle and don’t give up. Make sure you celebrate your successes along the way even if they are small.

what should we know about Alice’s Table? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Alice’s Table is a floral arrangement class that brings women together to learn a new skill and live a social and creative lifestyle. As a company, we empower women to create a community that prioritizes living well and working hard. Alice’s Table isn’t just a class it’s an experience, something fun to share with friends and family.

I host public, private and corporate events and we recently just relaunched our assisted-DIY wedding suite. My events are held in Boston and on the North Shore at top restaurants, bars, and shops. Each attendee learns how to create a beautiful arrangement and bring it home in a stylish new vase. Attendees are not just creating a floral arrangement they are learning tips and tricks that they can use at home.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think one of the biggest barriers that women face is being a mom and a businesswoman. There is this idea that you have to choose between having a family or career or one will suffer. If anything becoming a parent strengthened my skills for the workforce. As a mom you need to multi-task, problem solves and come up with creative solutions on the spot.

A few years ago, I was revamping my resume and there was a gap between when I stayed home with my first son. I was worried it would look bad but my dad told me to include it in my resume. He told me to be proud of the skills and knowledge I had learned and that I should be looking for a future employer that felt the same. One of the things that I love about Alice’s Table is they really support women that want to have a career and be a mom.
