Conversations with the Inspiring Amy Dionne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Dionne.

Amy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was younger, I never had the AH-HA moment that lead me to my passion in life. One thing I did know was my passion for helping others. Looking to feed my creative personality and the dream to help others, I found that being a Hair Stylist achieved both of those every day. With 8 years in the industry, I know that being a stylist is where my heart belongs.

I started my career in Texas as an Independent Stylist at the age of 20. Quickly realizing that running my own business at such a young age would take a lot of maturity. Even at this age, I knew this was what I needed to do for my path in life. Over the next 4 years, I successfully grew my business with long hours and dedication to my career. In May of 2014, little did I know I would meet the love of my life on a weekend trip, who happens to be from NH. After a long distance relationship, I moved to Somerville, MA to be with him. We are now happily married!

The hardest thing for me was leaving my family and my business back in Texas, however, I knew this was a huge step for my career in the Hair Industry.

My first year working in Somerville, I was able to slow down a bit and really polish my skill set, while also learning new techniques to really advance my career. I started off in a commission salon, but quickly realized my entrepreneurial spirit needed to get back into running my own small business, thus, Adionne Hair came to life.

No words could truly describe the feeling of watching your business grow, knowing that you are living out your passion in life and helping people look and feel their best. The sky is truly the limit!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the Hair Industry, you always have to remember that you are on an uphill climb, always. There will always be struggles, but with that comes growth. I have always had a hard time letting go of the little mistakes I have made in the past. In a career that is very hands-on with other people, you always want to achieve perfection. This can be difficult on your confidence in the early years. Any mistake or struggle I have had, I have learned from.

Without these struggles, I would have never advanced to the stylist I am today.

For a year or two, I did struggle with thoughts of being in a more traditional line of work. I always wondered what it would be like to work a normal 9-5 schedule, as opposed to the late weeknights and constant weekends. Finally, I did have the opportunity to try out an office job. It didn’t take long for me to realize that was not where I belonged. However, I am grateful to have been able to test out the more traditional work-life. I was born to be creative and in a hands-on role.

For those just starting out, follow your passion. This will truly bring that rewarding satisfaction to you. If you fail, take it as a lesson and learn from it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Adionne Hair story. Tell us more about the business.
My absolute favorite service to do is Balayage.

There is something so satisfying about custom painting sections of the hair and seeing the final result. Balayage can look intimidating when the color is applied, but the final results yield gorgeous natural dimension. It is always customized and can create a natural sun-kissed color or even replicate a full foil with a more natural grow out.

Blonding is another one of my favorite services. Whether it be a natural blonde full of dimension or even a platinum all over color, I love them all. Creating beautiful blonde colors help to brighten up and refresh the hair and bring an overall brightness to each person.

My number one goal is to make sure each client leaves the salon feeling better than ever. Not only happy with their hair but also the overall experience they have with me as their stylist. I think of my clients as my friends and always welcome them with a friendly smile. We spend a lot of time together and I truly cherish those relationships.

Each and every client is a customized service, even down to the little details. With this type of customization, my color services often last a few hours and are never rushed.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Even from a small age, I had always been extremely particular about how my hair was styled. It wasn’t until the late teenage years that I grew an interest in pursuing Hair Styling as a career, but I do believe it has always been part of me.

Growing up in West Texas, I was surrounded by extremely driven and hardworking family members. My father is one of those. He would work long hours as a Fire Fighter and then on his days off he would also pursue his entrepreneurial part-time work. My mother also worked full time as a Teacher. She always showed such passion for her career and even the evenings and weekends she spent planning, for the weeks and months ahead, without pay for those extra hours spent.

I have always had the urge to work for the things I want. My parents would give me jobs around the house to earn money. This instilled a strong work ethic that is still engraved in me to this day.

Customer service has been a major part of all the jobs I have ever worked. Who knew my part-time job in high school working for a Country Club would give me the customer service experience I would later use in the Hair Industry.
