Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Indermaur.
Scott, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have built Indermaur Media sharing stories through the visual language of photography and video. My gift lies in discovering the familiar in the exotic and the remarkable in the ordinary. I have a unique ability to connect with my subjects, putting even the most camera shy at ease.
I began my career as a photojournalist with newspapers. Then as an official photographer for Major League Soccer and fulfilling assignments for sport publications like Sports Illustrated, I established an eye for sports, entertainment and live action.
While exploring the idea and creation of a personal project, and my own relationship with spirituality, I wanted to learn how other people connect with their sense of self. I created the original photography project REVEALED. The project gained support from NPR and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and has been exhibited at the Newport Art Museum and Providence City Hall. REVEALED led to a successful fine-art book, and a documentary film played at over a dozen film festivals across the USA and Europe.
My intentions for REVEALED were to photograph spirituality from a non-literal perspective. I wanted to peel back the layers of traditional spirituality and focus on the individual’s personal essence. I presented my subjects with a small wooden box and asked them in advance of their photography session to bring items that represented their spiritual experience in which to fill the space. The concept of identity and the awareness of a higher existence quickly evolved into a vessel of self-exploration and quiet confession. [www.revealedproject.com]
Today, as a Multimedia Producer I am responsible for telling stories using video and still photography. I often manage the entire production process: generating and executing ideas, meeting budgets and deadlines, and expanding the team when necessary to accommodate a client’s vision.
New projects include incorporating photos and video, social media projects, and creating original content to deliver the best story possible. I find myself in a position of Directing and Producing more than before, and not even operating a camera. Then there are times I am simply the lead Producer, managing and directing the team to create a story. So, today I am a Multimedia Producer.
For myself, and Indermaur Media, new modern “photography” delivers a much richer story when a tool box of skills and an excellent team can come together to execute and deliver the finest visual project possible.
As I expand my desire to share media through storytelling in all forms, I share my expertise and the nuts and bolts of this business through my Visual Creative Coach business. [www.visualcreativecoach.com]
My love for iPhone photography and small businesses has grown into a photography product where I capture phone photography for social media and marketing uses. Then it’s paired up with engaging captions and researched hashtags to be part of a business’ social media marketing plan. [www.visualthrive.com]
I enjoy creating creative, authentic work which can be seen in my accomplished portfolio of photography, video production. I have been fortunate that this extensive experience has allowed me to meet amazingly accomplished individuals in a wide variety of industries, including: medical, financial, tech, manufacturing, not-for-profit, consumer goods, legal, lifestyle, hospitality, and travel. Past clients include IBM, Rhode Island School of Design, BCBS of Rhode Island, and Black & Decker.
Scott enjoys spending time with family and friends, sailing, dining at hole in the wall restaurants, cooking, brewing beer and hard cider, and, most of all, connecting with new people and working on his inner and spiritual growth. He is located in Rhode Island and has served as the President for ASMP New England (Boston) and Mid-America (Kansas City) chapters. [www.IndermaurMedia.com]
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art ranges from connected photography portraits to personal projects that have deep meaning to me and personal exploration to the creation of robust corporate visual narratives.
For example, my project REVEALED came out of the exploration of my spirituality and what I believe. While my project Self-love was an exploration of how I experience and define my self-love. My portrait work focuses on eliciting the beautifully unique aspects of my subjects and exposing that through photos. While my corporate work focuses on telling a story about my corporate clients’ brand by providing views of their work through leadership, employees, and satisfied customers.

I strongly feel personal projects are essential for any artist. It allows me to grow personally and expand my art while exploring a project that feeds my heart and soul. My “business” creations will always focus solely on delivering the best visuals for someone or something else.
I create art projects that allow someone to learn about themselves through another individual. I also strive to develop projects that give gentle permission for a person to pause and look inward.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success for myself is the connection between my projects and the feeling of excitement. I also define the success of an art project when it allows me to learn more about myself, and if the project touches others.
I can be my worse critic, and over the years I have learned to accept how things have turned out. REVEALED taught me that a change in lighting or other technical imperfections was perfect at the moment.
To be successful as an artist is to take action on your ideas and share with the world. Believe in yourself!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
