Check out Nikki Konchak’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Konchak.

Nikki, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was going to Suffolk University to pursue a career in law when I had a sudden change of heart. Something in me told me this was not for me. I am 100% the opposite of corporate America and anything law-related! So, to save my parents tons of money, I transferred to UMass Boston and started taking some electives to figure out what I wanted to do. After a couple of art classes, I ended up switching my major from pre-law to Fine Arts. I studied Art history, took painting, 3D art, and photography! I loved it, I was hooked. Black & white photos always gave me all the feels. I was actually having fun in school and I met one of my best friends there. Once I graduated, I had an intro Fashion gig in Boston which sounded better than it was, this was short-lived.

I had interviews at various schools for Art teacher positions, but the money wasn’t there and I needed to live and eat. I ended up taking a job at State Street Corporation, the literal polar opposite of what I wanted or went to school for BUT I met my husband there! Everything really does happen for a reason. Fast forward to the next year, we were married and expecting our first daughter. It wasn’t until then that I really started picking up my camera again. And by started picking up my camera again, I mean, I was obsessively taking photos of Olivia and my puppy and posting it all over Facebook. I would write little posts here and there saying “man, I wish I could get paid for doing this…” Soon, people started to take notice and asked me to take pictures of their kids. I did photography as a side business for a little while and eventually got busy enough to make photography my living! I live outside of Boston with my husband of over 11 years, my ten-year-old daughter Liv, my seven-year-old daughter, Emelia and a whole menagerie of animals, including my 200 lbs. St. Bernard, Winston. Life is good!

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a natural light photographer, I shoot mostly newborns, children, and families but have done more than a dozen weddings & engagements over the past few years too! I do it because it makes me happy. As simple as that sounds, I love my job. I like that I have so many families that have been a part of since the beginning. Newborn shoots, maternity shoots, weddings, getting a puppy! There are days that it is stressful, don’t get me wrong and there is the actual “business” side of running a business that I don’t love. But all in all, I make memories that are on my client’s walls! How great is that? I want people to see my photos and smile. I want them to remember the day and session as fun. relaxing and candid, not posed and boring.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I think that with everything happening in the world today people need art more than ever. I have noticed times when the economy is not doing well, my business suffers. Art is a luxury and luxuries are always the first to go!

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
