Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Momoko Schafer.
Kristen, better known as Momo, has explored ideas around humans as creatures of habit, and as creatures of the night. At night many of us reveal parts of ourselves that may be considered closer to our true personalities. She also has explored the concept of dreams as a doorway to the subconscious. In her own dream experiences she digests recent events while overlapping with distant memories. In those dreams the bridges between different worlds, languages, and philosophies are often highlighted. Glass is a material that inherently helps to showcase these layers and blurred lines.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Momo, is a second year Artist-in-Residence working with hot glass at New Street Glass Studio. In her most recent work, she has designed domestic objects that provoke conversations and have interactive elements.
Designing works that invite the audience to have tactile engagement is one of her particular interest. She uses texture and form to evoke the audience’s familiarity with previous encounters. In order to achieve this, Momoko has experimented with ceramics, hot sculpted glass, and blowing glass into a variety of molds. Her use of figures also invites the viewer to start developing a personal relationship with these sculptures. Some of the titles prompt fresh ideas, seemingly separate from the neat and elegant forms, but suggest Momoko’s connection with the work.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I hope that by provoking dialogue with my work that important issues arise in these conversations. All-inclusivity is important for me to maintain in my work (especially considering how exclusive the fine art world is). My work provides a moment of comfort and fantasy for those who are eccentric. And for those who could be considered complacent, my work provides the opportunity for them to wonder about the worlds and perspectives they are not familiar with.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
