Today we’d like to introduce you to Dedee Shattuck.
Dedee, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
We live in an area of exceptional beauty and artists’ responses to the landscape are as varied as the mediums that are available. The Southcoast, also referred to as the Farmcoast, is brimming with artists tucked away down country lanes, bends in rivers, or in the spacious lofts of New Bedford and Fall River. In my decision to open a gallery, I wanted to showcase the artistry that abounds here, and then to eventually ripple out in the geography of the world. From local artists, to national to international.
The current exhibition features what I call a “poet photographer,” Ole Brodersen of Norway. He works with a large format camera, positioning himself within the arctic landscape, releases a sail of cloth into the air, or sparklers on invisible rafts, opens the shutter for thirty of forty minutes, and captures how the wind or currents have transformed our concept of landscape, enchanting us with his patient vision.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have created an inspiring space…..artists feel such a sense of gratitude for the chance to exhibit in the gallery. People come in, and are immediately stunned by the architecture of a Quaker Meeting House, with light streaming in from the four corners of soaring windows. A sense of peace and harmony pervades….and settles the mind, allowing visitors to take in the artwork with an unhurried feeling. The countryside is visible from the inside: gently waving branches from the forest, hayfields ready to be mown, hummingbirds sipping nectar, butterflies flitting past.
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
I had a dream of designing the most beautiful gallery that I could ever imagine. I have had tremendous support from our community. They say that the gallery enriches the entire area, and I am reciprocally grateful for their enthusiasm. I couldn’t obsess about the financial viability of such a challenging venture, so there was a “hold my breath” moment of anticipation. The response to my dream continues to be the generator of my energy.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Visiting the gallery is a destination, a fulfilling journey.
