Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Godwin.
Danny, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was originally born in South India and moved to the US when I was just one. I grew up in the town of Lexington, just 20 minutes from Boston. Growing up, my dad played guitar and led worship. My grandpa (his dad) was known in the family, back in India, as the talented multi-instrumentalist who played almost everything. The first digital Casio my dad got for him back in the 80’s was passed down to me. I think I was two or three years old when I started messing with it and learning melodies by ear. Fast-forward to age seven and that was when I took my first formal piano lesson and age 15 when I wrote my first song. After that, I started playing in church and school jazz bands. In 2012, I enrolled in Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2016 with a degree in Music Production and Engineering.
In 2018, I began to focus more on my solo project, “Godwin”. It took me more than year to sit down and work on my writing style and just getting the confidence to put myself out there. I worked for a year and half at this tech company which ended up shutting down literally the day I began shooting my first music video so I realized it was now or never. I released my newest single, “Side’ on all major platforms last April and released my first music video a month later on VEVO. With this project, I’m involved in every aspect of the process from the writing and production to the creation of the artwork which I do all at my house.
As for what’s next, I am wrapping up a new EP and various collaborations that I’m planning to release later this year. My vision of the future includes more writing, performing and producing for the rest of 2018 into next year. Music is often times a challenging but rewarding path and I’m fortunate to have family and friends that support me.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am an artist, producer and writer from Boston, MA. My artist project is titled “Godwin” which is my last name. I write music that is a dreamy blend of atmospheric pop that combines elements of indie and hip-hop that channels artists such as James Blake, LANY and Sufjan Stevens. My lyrics invoke sacred themes, nostalgia and introspection.
From my art, I hope people take away that there is beauty in life’s complex questions and relationships. My beliefs and my constant wrestling for truth is a recurring a theme in my music. As an introvert, my music and artwork share my quiet whisper amongst a noisy world.
I write primary alternative pop music and I also hope to share my story of my cultural upbringing as an Indian American into the mainstream. I think so many young people from my cultural upbringing are usually discouraged from pursuing a career in the arts. I believe so many first generation immigrants have a unique story to share and I hope to be one of its voices in popular American culture.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think the biggest challenge facing artists today is the internet. With social media, there is a vast array of ways to distribute and share your art online. The caveat is that your art unfortunately gets lost in the influx of content out there that to be simply be heard, you need to achieve certain metrics, namely likes, followers and views. More often than not, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to fellow artists on social media which can become unhealthy in the process. As an artist, it’s important to use these tools to get your art out there but also be careful to not let it distract you from what matters most.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
