Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne ‘Nan’ Fitzpatrick.
Anne, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
“LIFE IS IN THE DETAILS” – Anne Fitzpatrick ‘Nan’
My ethos towards life and art is defined by two oscillating expressions: “life is in the details” and “maximize the experience.”
I explore the intersection (and the literal overlapping) of iconic, historic and cultural influences with sophistication, whimsy and visual eloquence… creating and capturing an “ah ha” moment thrills me. This chromatic alchemy draws upon an oeuvre of carefully culled life experiences, which create my work. I am most inspired by a lifelong passion for international travel, iconic figures, history, design, cinematography, philanthropy and fine art. In May 2017, I was invited as a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome and am currently working on a body of work as a result of that transformative time.
My career was launched in the fast paced “Mad-Men”-esque world of advertising, print, paper and publishing in the 1980s in Boston, Los Angeles, New York and Montreal. Avid work within design, fashion and media enhanced my natural ability to process and interpret many facets of the world with a fresh and informed lens. I love puzzles and mysteries and enthusiastically follow market trends as a “sleuth” a.k.a Agatha Christie…
This regard for the simultaneous expansion and compression of life’s moments is revealed in my photo montage series’; ‘Paris Couture,’ ‘Habana Cubana’ and ‘Vertigo.’
Philanthropy has always been an essential component of my personal philosophy. Performing arts, preservation and public art are areas I am passionate about and continuously support as they nurture both one’s creativity and open a conversation while providing balance and respite in an urban environment.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Over time, the way I have both thought about art and created my art has changed and evolved… limitless. Historically art has been thought of in relatively ridged terms – only works displayed in a gallery or a museum could be considered art. I believe that in the age of the internet, with Instagram and Facebook dominating the media landscape, art has become more accessible and democratized, and this has dramatically changed my views. No longer do I feel I need to dedicate time to my studio to “create art”. Rather, my experiential lens is my art. I take inspiration from my travel, my philanthropy and from every interaction I have. I display much of what I create, photos, paintings, videos, etc. on my website. Currently, I am particularly focused on the “Nan Goes” portion of my site (also found on Instagram at NanFitzGoes), which is an ongoing conversation exploring art, fashion, history and our cultural landscape. Nan Goes highlights my life in real time and many of the experiences documented here provide inspiration for my work.
That is not to say that the physical studio is not still important. I still maintain a studio in which I compile and document various pieces of inspiration and where I create visual art pieces which can be displayed – paintings, sketches, photomontages, videos, etc., but I believe that the internet has dramatically changed how art can both be created and seen, and I fully embrace that through my website and elsewhere.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Attend as many gallery openings as possible and build your “Art Posse”… you will see current work and enjoy the process…
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have had work displayed in a variety of local studios including BrickBottom and 450 Harrison in Sowa, and have participated in our Open Studios, Art Walks and various other “happenings”. I am delighted that over the past few years my work and life have blended on my social media presence. I do continue to sell my work annually at the MASSART Auction, the SMFA Sale and the bi-annual ARTcetera and donate 100% of sales to these organizations. I have also been blessed to have sold much of my work to corporate and private collections. These and pieces currently available for purchase are featured in the gallery section of my website.
More recently, I have been working on a new series influenced by my time at the American Academy in Rome and once complete I will be looking for gallery representation in Boston, New York, Rome and other cities. I’m very excited to show these new pieces and to share my work with others… gallerists, curators and art advisors.
