Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Greer Emmerson.
Susan Greer, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Here’s a link to an online interview I did for “Money” magazine. http://ti.me/2G1LSjS I was a surgeon and retired early to go to art school. I completed my BFA and MFA and am currently a full-time artist and a member of the Kingston Gallery in South Boston. I live and have my studio in Dorchester.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My work is an exploration of the picture plane; it delves into that surface between wall and the environment and expands that surface for the viewer to follow. My drawings and paintings rise off the wall into three dimensions, forming shadows and caverns which in turn incorporate themselves into the work itself. Using surfaces of Tyvek, paper and canvas, I explore below these surfaces and expand them outward by heating, sanding, cutting, gluing and plastering and incorporating the structure into the imagery. For this body of work my imagery is that of creating and destroying; of depicting the horrible violence that natural storms, worsened by human mistakes, can do to our built environment and our fellow humans. It is about the terror of the loss of home and community and a feeling of safety that can never be fully restored.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
Gaining respect for your work; generating adequate income.

I will be having a solo show at the Brookline Art Center in January 2019 and shows at Kingston in January 2020 and September 2020.
