Today we’d like to introduce you to Penny Slice.
Penny, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My name’s Penny. I’m a Painter from Lowell, MA. Growing up in the city had helped my art. There’s inspiration everywhere. I’ve been a painter my entire life but only started making a career out of it about 3 years ago. I lost my mom around that time after a long illness. It taught me not to hold back. Live your best life and do things you’ve always wanted to do. Life is too short to just dream about things. Since then I’ve done conventions, owned an art studio and have been putting my art out there every chance I get. I think I’ll be painting well into my 90’s. Art is my passion. I don’t know where I would be without a paint brush in my hand.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My style is not your average. I mainly make light up paintings. I sketch out a canvas, usually horror or something iconic. I paint the entire canvas to my specifications and then I dissect it, removing pieces and adding lighting. I can manipulate light is many ways. It’s always interesting to me and onlookers. It adds an extra something so my pieces that not all art has. I always want my work to be entertaining but also expand your eyes a bit. Aside from light up paintings I also enjoy making mashup art. For instance, I once painted a Ren & Stimpy “Creation of Adam” mashup. I love pairing classic paintings we all know with 90’s cartoons. Mainly because it makes me giggle. I always hope my art is well received and if I can make someone laugh while doing it that’s even more rewarding. Art is something I will throughout my life. Even if I wasn’t selling anything I would still do it. It’s like breathing for me. I need it.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I believe art is huge now. Many Many inventors and such make it even harder to stand out. I haven’t seen many people that do what I do. I have that on my side. Originality is key!.
