Art & Life with Katie Salerno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Salerno.

Katie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a native Bostonian and grew up photographing with black and white film cameras. I absolutely loved the darkroom process, but wasn’t totally upset to switch to digital and give my hands a break from chemical smells.

I started in high school but didn’t feel drawn to this world until my travels led me abroad to Eastern Africa. While there, I fell in love with documentary photography and finding new ways to photograph different peoples and cultures.

After college, I moved back to Boston and spent a few years working at various start-ups around the city. It wasn’t until after I photographed a close friend’s engagement that I realized photography could actually be a career choice. I left my job the fall of 2016 and immediately went full-time. I was hooked. Katie Salerno Photography came to be, and the rest is history.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My job is unique because this business is personal. As a photographer, I get to step into my client’s lives for a day, and see their lives unfold in front of me. I get to document all of the wonderful things that make a person unique. I’m drawn to emotional and soulful storytelling and seek to capture the real personalities of people and turn it into real art. It’s a total honor.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I think the biggest challenge artists face today is remaining authentic and creating art that’s wholly theirs. Platforms like Instagram are so incredible because it connects artists from all other the world and inspires people. However, it’s important not to get swept up in the comparison game or focus on another photographer’s aesthetic.

We’re in a creative space and we all start at the same place. Do what you love and create the imagery that you’re drawn to. Oh, and find purpose in your work.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I publish my work on my website: katiesalerno.com and on Instagram: @katieasalerno.
