Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerson Eguiguren.
Gerson, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a singer and viola player born in Ecuador, my dream was to play violin when I was 6 but my family didn’t have any possibility to support my dream, I developed my musicianship as a singer, went to the Olympic Choir competition as a lead singer of the OPAM choir representing Ecuador. At my 18 years old I bought a violin, professional musicians, family and friends told me I was too old to start such a complicated instrument. I believed so hard on following my dreams that after year and a half I started playing with the best string ensembles for international festivals back at home. I got strong as a Latin-American and jazz singer, my dream school was Berklee College of Music, since I was 13, auditioned once and got some scholarship, I did some research about living expenses and gave up, auditioned a year later again, got the Latin American tour scholarship, and a Ecuadorian’n government scholarship, went to Berklee for the last 4 years, with basically full scholarship, I got called to sing next to the most important and famous musicians in the world for important Berklee events. Also, I became one of the most requested viola players for important events, recordings and clinics for important guests. I graduated in 2017 with a Music Degree on Performance and ProMusic at Berklee College of Music. Now I’m keep representing Ecuador and bringing the music and culture to the whole world.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
For me each musician has a unique voice, a unique sound. We come with unique talents that are meant to help, to heal and to communicate what others don’t have the voice to express it. Is our responsibility to develop them with dedication and responsibility, the porpoise of my art is to share, to learn about other cultures and get to understand what are their struggles and their joys, to be able to sympathise. When I was a kid I use to constantly think: who in this world right now is needing someone to talk with or to cry or to have help. I think music is the most powerful tool that can bring messages, share stories, change politics, help to those that need and even give piece to simple situations, people get connected through music and for a musician the experience of rehearsing, getting to meet people and participate in multi diverse projects gives you the amazing experience of meeting people from all over the world, people that represent entire countries and cultures and with this journey you get to connect with the world and then you are able to understand and sympathize more.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
A musician needs to be able to learn from others and share about what you know, sometimes we forget about what our own country and culture can offer and you will realize that’s the most powerful thing you can share and offer because you grew up with it. The most powerful thing that works to build a community is to be focus just the professional daily life, but be aware of your coworkers, hear what are they going throw, we all go through difficult situations and just musicians will understand your struggles,
