Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Coelho Picone.
Allison, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Raised by scientific and philosophical parents, I always knew that I would be an artist. My desire to unite aesthetics, science, and spirituality inspires my artwork. I am particularly influenced by artists who take on light as a subject of inquiry in itself: Turner, Monet, and Van Gogh, for examples. Degas’ dynamic compositions are also an influence. In September of 2010 an art retreat in Cape Cod reawakened my sensitivity to nature. I placed representation aside to explore the peaceful and restorative power that nature yields through an application of various mediums and techniques.
My fine art series speak to different aspects of spirituality and belief: my Queen Anne’s Lace series addresses the idea of life after death, and my paintings in Freedom of the Seasons – The Pace of Nature speak to the innate goodness of all living things.
Three prized possessions from childhood are my mother’s pencil drawing of a Kate Greenaway illustration, hand-made colorful clothes and a quilt-like sleeping bag featuring whimsical patterns. Because patterns and images have surrounded me throughout life, I am embarking on another creative journey, that of surface patterns. I am currently interpreting my fine art (and creating anew) into design collections for apparel, domestics, fabric and other products. These products will in turn be marketed to women and their families who shop for peaceful, relaxing and restorative products.
A life-long resident of Massachusetts, I have traveled to Europe, Saint Lucia, New Orleans, Mexico and most of the Eastern coast. I live in Grafton, MA, with my husband, Bill and two children.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
As I observe Nature, I often dwell upon the light and goodness within every living thing. A backlit leaf will hold me in deep thought. Every color invades my line of vision, especially the elements filled with light. This color absorption blurs the objects; the leaf and its surroundings are transformed to swatches of vibrating color, similar to a painting itself. The light in the image becomes a dreamy and glowing ethereal presence. What I see, feel, hear and imagine, I create.
My paintings and surface pattern designs have grown to incorporate acrylic, pencil, ink, and now collaged textures. The results of collaged textures are chaotic, but through my process, a simpler image is revealed.
Nature has a magical tranquility that connects mind, body, and soul; we being living entities connected by earth, air, and water. Life’s chaos can be transformed into peace if one takes a moment to breathe. Each painting and design embraces what Nature provides, that of a stillness, a peace, and light in our hearts.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
Artists are immersed in their craft, often in a deep and magical way. The knowledge of when to put the creating aside in order to concentrate on the business side of art is a challenge in both time and energy. Having been out of college for a few moons, I would highly recommend all colleges and universities have mandatory small business classes to mold and balance the minds of their aspiring art majors.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My fine art is represented by L’Attitude Gallery on Harrison Ave in Boston, MA and by Linda Sbrogna of Sbrogna’s Artistic Promotions. Six pieces are in the permanent collection at UMASS Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA. I also have displays of my work locally at Escape Salon and A Basic Knead Massage and Bodywork in Westborough, MA.
