Check out Dan Masi’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Masi.

Dan, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m a painter and illustrator from Somerville, MA. I was educated at the dearly lamented and sadly deceased Art Institute of Boston. For 20 years I created display art for the often lamented and equally deceased Martignetti Liquors, a neighborhood icon in Brighton, MA. I have created many works promoting the likes of balladeers, satirists, carnies, makers of spiritous beverages, performance halls, smoke shops, houses of worship, and books of fact and fancy. My most recent project has been creating full- room murals and other ephemera for the Lilypad in Cambridge, MA.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My creations range from small, ink- spattered illustrations to monstrous murals. All are steeped in symbolism and dark psychedelia, weaving together elements of mythology and modern anxiety, and exploring themes of illusion and ennui. I draw inspiration from the decadent art of the fin de siècle, and decadence in general lifestyle. If my works were to inspire anything, I’d hope they stir the same sensations I felt when seeing the creations that have inspired me.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
Conditions for anyone that doesn’t have an applicable trade are going to be pretty bleak. As art budgets get smaller, the craftsman becomes an expensive indulgence and the aesthetic becomes dictated by what is most automated, digitized, pasteurized, and homogenized. A glance around this fair city is all you need to see what happens when an overabundance of affluence chases out its artistic communities and replaces them with luxury condos and banks.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My enormous, six-month-in-the-making murals “El Pelele” (after Goya) and “Under the Hill’ are currently enveloping the Lilypad, a collaboratively run, all-ages venue that hosts artistic performances and private events in Cambridge, MA. You can see many of my creations at my mostly-assembled website mayzeeworks.com, where I can be contacted for all your artistic needs
