Meet Dia Moeller of Dia Moeller Tattoo in Medford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dia Moeller.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my apprenticeship to become a tattoo artist in the beginning of 2009 at the same shop I work now, the Boston Tattoo Company (then the Painted Bird Tattoo) under the supervision of some very talented artist who I am lucky to consider family.

After almost two years I became a licensed tattoo artist. I have been tattooing for seven years this coming may and I am as much in love with my profession as I was on day one.

I am grateful for the mentors I met along the way and my clients who trusted me with not only their skin but also the personal experience we share while we work together.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think learning anything is ever a smooth road, but I also consider myself very lucky that I don’t have any apprenticeship horror stories 🙂

On the other hand I think anything that has to do with art will involve struggling. Art is so subjective and means a different thing to everyone. As an artist you are very rarely happy with the work you put out; always looking to improve and that can be a difficult task; but also extremely rewarding.

Please tell us about Dia Moeller Tattoo.
As an artist and tattooer I specialize in illustrative realism type of work and I am best known for feminine yet macabre style illustrations along with botanical illustrations. Boston has a rich tattoo scene with so many talented artists, doing a lot of different things so it is both easy and hard to be set apart from others.

I consider myself lucky to have a personal aesthetic that a lot of people find appealing as well. I am proud that between this and the amazing ideas my clients have, together we are able to create tattoos and artwork that are beautiful now but (hopefully) timeless as well. I think this is the most interesting part of my job: to make sure that I create pieces that will be loved for many many years to come, regardless of subject matter.

I am proud of the work I do but I am a lot more proud of the personal relationships I built over the years. I found some of my best friends and greatest support system through tattooing and I don’t think any of it would’ve been possible if I choose to go in a different direction in life.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly? Nothing. I don’t think regrets are worth anyone’s time. There are always hardships and difficult decisions to be made along the way, but looking back at the past 10 years of my life, all of that was worth it. I am grateful for the place I am and the people I am surrounded by and would not change it for anything.
