Art & Life with Regina McGearty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina McGearty.

Regina, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My story is very similar to most artists, in that making and creating have always been a part of my life; drawing, painting, pottery…anything and everything. I began making jewelry alongside my Aunt probably in my late teens. I have no formal art training or education, in fact, I have a Masters in Criminal Justice and always intended on going into Law Enforcement.

I’ve been fortunate to have always been surrounded by a strong creative community and was lucky to have had the opportunity to live in New Mexico for several years. The art, culture and scenery there really helped bring my love of art back into focus for me.

Moving back home to Massachusetts and finding Western Avenue Studios right in Lowell, where I live, allowed me to set up a new creative home for myself. In 2007, I began selling my handmade line of jewelry full time and am lucky enough to be able to make a living doing what I love.

Being part of the Western Avenue Studios community I’ve been able to learn from so many talented Artists & Makers, including my fellow jewelers and Artists in other media as well. A few years ago I took a class at Western Ave in Encaustic painting and fell in love all over again. While my primary focus is my jewelry, I still dabble in Encaustic and am thoroughly enjoying the journey.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I make jewelry primarily using Swarovski Crystal, fine metals, natural gemstones and anything else that catches my eye. I enjoy the versatility of working with such a variety of materials and creating pieces that become everyday staples or special family heirlooms. I love working closely with my customers to create special pieces for them or their loved ones. It’s probably the top reason I love what I do. Interacting with my customers’ one on one is so special to me. I love the feeling in that moment when you realize your customer has become your friend!

As with most handmade items, a piece of who I am goes into everything I make and everything I make is a reflection of my personality and how I’m feeling in that moment. I hope when people wear my jewelry and see it sparkle they smile and know that their purchase supported an Artist on their creative odyssey.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
I think one of the hardest things for Artists is the financial struggle. You’re almost never going to be guaranteed a steady weekly paycheck and you’re always going to have those moments of “Am I going to be able to pay the bills this month”.

One of the most important things is realizing that, no matter how talented you may be, your art is not going to sell itself. Marketing and promoting your work is essential.

There are the obvious resources like Social Media, handing out business cards and relying on family and friends to tout how unbelievably wonderful you are…and you should do all those things!

You also need to spend a good amount of time touting yourself and learning how to do that. Things like putting together your brand, finding your audience and just getting yourself out there.

Take advantage of Marketing classes and seminars in your area!! Many of them are often free! Don’t be afraid of rejection. It’s going to happen, not because your work isn’t good, but just because it may not be the right fit at that moment! Don’t be scared to apply to shows and approach Galleries and shops that you think will be a good fit for your work. Be discriminating! You don’t have to jump at every chance that comes along but if it seems like a good opportunity for YOU, then Go For It! Don’t get discouraged if an opportunity doesn’t pan out or wasn’t as great as you had expected. It happens to all of us. Just keep plugging away and most importantly have confidence in your work!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work is available through my shop at www.walkonthemoon.com and in my studio A206 at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell, MA. It’s also available in several boutiques and shops throughout the country.

My studio is open during our Open Studios events on the First Saturday of every month and by appointment or chance.

You can also see my jewelry in a joint Gallery show coming this November at the Ayer Lofts Gallery in Lowell. “Luminosity: Astrophotography & Inspired Jewelry”

You can catch a bit of my Encaustic work in February 2019 at a group show “Gypsy Soul” at the Lawrence Library in Pepperell, MA

As always, follow along on Instagram and Facebook for updates, works in progress and some cute Beagle photos too!
