Meet Harry Milloff of The Moseley Group in Franklin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Milloff.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The Moseley Group was founded in 1989 by Tom Moseley. He had a background in wood-working and design, and the company was the first to take many restaurant brands, like McDonald’s, Burger King, Starbucks, Subway, and Dunkin’ Donuts into new business channels with smaller format restaurants. The company’s expertise in the systems and operations of restaurants, as well as the importance of experiential brands were sown in our DNA during these early years as these chains found new revenues in airports, colleges, and other nontraditional real estate.

Today, The Moseley group is a strategic consulting firm focused on the foodservice industry and the environments in which food and beverages are made, delivered and enjoyed. We define brand strategy and build or optimize all the touchpoints that bring this to life– from menu, kitchens, and operations to communications and the interior and exterior design of restaurants and retail environments. Our clients include large international chains as well as emerging upstarts.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The company started as a manufacturing firm, building and installing our designs for our clients. We did not have the scale, however, to compete on price when our clients wanted hundreds of stores, and in 2000, we stopped any restaurant fabrication at our offices. We realized that our value was really in defining the strategic direction, opportunity, and holistic design, and this comprises our work today. While this was not really a struggle, it was a significant shift in our business focus.

The Moseley Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
There is really no other firm that we are aware of that does what we do. There are design and graphic firms or kitchen operational experts, but no firm solely focuses on the food and beverage industry, nor do any integrate all aspects of the business, considering how each impact the other in the way that we do. For example, when we worked with the locally based Cumberland Farms several years ago, we redesigned their logo and communications, the interior and exterior of their stores, and developed a robust food and beverage program that continues to grow today. There is an interdependency among these various elements. We are most proud of projects where we are able to activate all aspects of the retail experience as we did here, but it would not be successful without the kind of smart and visionary leadership that Ari Haseotes provides at Cumberland Farms as its CEO.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing a newly opened Kudu Restaurant in Saudi Arabia. – hitting all financial targets that we projected from a pre-and-post remodel scenario.
