Meet Pam and Jonah Hulbert of Worthy Girl in Beverly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pam and Jonah Hulbert.

Pam and Jonah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We opened Worthy Girl for selfish reasons. Simply put, we love shopping. And we love the thrill of consignment shopping – finding great deals on stuff other people paid full price for. But here’s what we don’t love –all the shenanigans that often come with it: having to muscle through tons of NO’s (smelly, stained, uncool in a way not even a hipster would wear) just to find just one YES on racks packed so tight, you have to be She-Ra to browse them. And since we couldn’t find a place that had the vibe we wanted, we created Worthy Girl.

The drive of Worthy Girl is to give women in transitional stages of life, such as, college, first careers, and young moms starting a family, access to gently used clothing and accessories that are on trend and priced significantly lower than our mall-based counterparts.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We had a pretty solid vision from the start of the kind of shop we wanted to have. From day one we have stuck to that vision which has helped us stay grounded and focused throughout this journey.

Honestly, our biggest challenge to date has been trying to undo the stigma that consignment or second-hand shopping is something that is “less than” and that anything goes as far as styles and condition of clothing. The reality is that there are some great stores opening up that upgrade the level of consignment shopping without being tagged as “luxury” and we like to think that we are a part of that trend.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Worthy Girl – what should we know?
If you walk into our shop and feel like you are at a consignment store then we aren’t doing our job. Aside from our gently used inventory and extremely reasonable prices, our spacious layout, organized and roomy racks, on-trend styles and industrial chic decor should make you feel like you are at a well-curated boutique.

If we had to pick one thing we love about the shop it would have to be our unicorn and caticorn dressing room curtains. Those things are baller.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
It seems cliché, but we never settle for good enough. We set out to be a different kind of consignment shop, which means we need to keep evolving to stay ahead of the status quo. We love what we do and we love our employees. Going into the shop or office never seems like a daunting chore. This is truly enjoyable stuff.

Pricing:

  • 95% of our inventory is under $25
  • Designer jeans are $30 or under

Pam what a great store you and Jonah have created. It certainly looks like a boutique, not a consignment shop. I love the brick walls, they add to the ambiance. The building outside with the windows, lights, script and lovely seating is simply charming. You both should be very proud!!
