Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Ames.
Rebecca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After years in social work, I knew that I loved helping people heal and found particular interest in stress reduction and the mind/body connection. I had been practicing yoga since 2001, teaching since 2011, and ultimately made the leap to bring my eastern and western training together into a wellness business. In particular, community-based social work had given me insight into and – a passion for – bringing wellness practices out of the yoga studio setting and into the community. Wainhouse Wellness now teaches yoga, stress reduction workshops, and meditation in peoples homes, corporations, assisted living facilities, addiction recovery centers, schools, etc. It’s incredibly meaningful to eliminate the obstacle of getting our clients TO a practice space but rather bring the practice space to them.
Has it been a smooth road?
There is no smooth road to entrepreneurship! I think finding a mentor or two is absolutely key. Learning from mistakes rather than getting caught up in regret is essential – you have to keep moving forward. Remember that any time you make your passion into your business, it is now your livelihood. Your relationship to it will change. You may need to find somewhere else in your life to have a hobby but also remember what connected you to this passion in the first place.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Wainhouse Wellness – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Wainhouse Wellness truly customizes what we bring to each individual. Sometimes, that means getting to know a corporate culture or finding a creative solution to where and when a class is held. Other times, it’s helping a client work through an injury and adapting the yoga practice as healing progresses. Some clients need to learn to breathe, or slow down, or find focus… we meet each client exactly where they are, session to session. I love when a client is skeptical about yoga but is willing to give it a shot anyway… I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t fall in love with the practice within a couple of sessions! I think the individual attention we provide truly helps that process.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I have listened to Christine Carter’s The Sweet Spot at least three times on audiobook over the last year or two, and it’s in my cue to listen again soon. She really encapsulates so much of what bogs us down and gets in the way of finding our groove. I also love recommending Headspace to any client! It’s a fantastic and relatable way to begin a mindfulness practice.
