Life and Work with Grace, Catherine, and Olivia Ferri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace, Catherine and Olivia Ferri.

Grace, Catherine, and Olivia, please share your story with us.
We grew up in an authentic Italian household where food was the center of our family time. Growing up, we never ate at a fast food restaurant and we never bought tomato sauce at the grocery story. Our meals were always fresh and home-cooked. Even today, when each of us is going in different directions, we still try to gather around the table at the end of a long day to partake in a healthy meal and share our stories. Each of us has different interests, skills, and perspectives, but we all agree on the importance of living and eating to promote optimum wellness.

Grace is starting medical school in August and approaches health in terms of biochemistry: She believes in strengthening your body for maximum mental and physical performance. Catherine is entering her second year at Babson College studying entrepreneurship. She helps to make connections with other partners in the industry who promote products with clean ingredients; as a former ballerina in high school, she remains active through yoga and a regular exercise regimen. Olivia is entering eighth grade and is a competitive dancer: She focuses on ingredients that are simple and nutritious. Since both sets of our grandparents were Italian, they taught us how to grow fresh produce, how to can our own tomatoes, how to make our own sausages, and prepare meals from scratch to share with others. We used to share our family stories with friends and they would always ask us for recipes and tips and seemed intrigued by our lifestyle. We were inspired to create a social media platform where we could share helpful hacks and food ideas with a broader audience and that was how Sisters Who Savor was created.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was definitely not a smooth road. Despite our common goals, we each have different perspectives on how to reach those objectives. We often have difficulty agreeing on what we want to communicate with our posts, how to fairly allot the work required to produce posts that are useful to our audience and that will capture the attention of our followers. It really breaks down into developing nutritious recipes, getting high-quality photos that capture what we experience in taste, creating a post that communicates our intent and following up with companies who share our interests and being responsive to followers who want to learn more. All that requires multi-tasking because we each have separate responsibilities and a limited amount of time to devote to our blog. It forces us to regularly communicate and prioritize.

Our advice for other young women who are just starting their journey is to be true to yourself. There are a lot of blogs out there. They promote a lot of different things. There are also a lot of different ways to be healthy. We don’t necessarily subscribe completely to one eating plan or another. We just try to overall know what is going into our bodies and making sure it consists of clean ingredients that we can pronounce and that we know aren’t created in a lab. Overall, we avoid a lot of carbs and focus on protein and lots of vegetables, but that doesn’t mean we still don’t have homemade pizza night on some Sundays using real flour. It also doesn’t mean we are perfect. We just try to do the best we can and be true to who we are and hope our followers remain interested.

Please tell us about Sisters Who Savor.
Our grandparents were from southern and northern Italy. We absolutely love using our heritage to re-create simple and clean recipes. When our grandparents were growing up, they had little means but they created the most wonderful meals. Today, those meals are considered gourmet. For example, our great-grandmother inspired our Chicken Agri’Dolce recipe on our blog. We use honey instead of sugar, but other than that, we have pretty much kept her exact recipe using celery, lemons, and herbs.

We are most proud of our ability to use this platform to broaden our family of food lovers. We focus on the food, but the real pride comes in creating a meal that serves as a reason to get together with others and communicate – without cell phones (after we take the dinner pic, of course).

We think what sets us apart is that we have no hidden agenda. We do this as much for ourselves as for our followers. It’s important for us to develop a recipe resource that we can go back to whenever we want to make a meal for a celebration, a special event, or simply a Monday night after a hard day. We love tradition. We make our own tomato sauce, marinated eggplant, Mexican salsa with garden veggies, cured Sicilian olives, and even marinated peppers. We are so proud when we have visitors come over and we can open up our pantry that’s filled with treats we’ve have created. Fall is harvest time and our favorite time of the year because that’s when we preserve our vegetables for use over the course of the year. I guess you could say we are “old souls.” We don’t know too many people who are still canning, especially not at our age.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Yes! As we have stated, family is everything to us. We were lucky enough to have known our grandparents. They came to this country as young adults and worked really hard to make life better for the next generation. They each did well for themselves but they taught us to always work hard and remain humble. Each of us is driven by these simple lessons. No matter how much you accomplish or how much you have in your bank account, it is important to be real and acknowledge that we live within a world of people who may be struggling for a variety of reasons. What makes us human is understanding those around us. Everyone is dealing with something so we always need to be reminded to not get so uptight about small things, think about the other person, know that a smile or a kind word could mean a lot to someone. We hope that our blog helps people see we aren’t perfect but we are trying our best to shed some light in the world in the best way we can.
