Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianne Boucher.
Brianne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Throughout high school and college, I was always extremely competitive in sports. I was ranked as a top swimmer in New England during high school and my team were state champions in track. After growing up as an athlete, I decided to study Kinesiology at the University of Maine at Orono to learn more about how the body works on a scientific level.
After graduating, I moved to southern Connecticut and worked in Purchase, NY in a corporate fitness position. The close proximity to New York City allowed me to take classes with big names like Tara Stiles, the founder of Strala Yoga, and Rachel Buschert Vazaralli, a Master Cycling Instructor. Despite the valuable relationships I made in New York, my heart longed to be in Boston. In January 2014, I moved to Boston and got a job right in the heart of the financial district, again, working for corporate fitness. While there, I taught outdoor bootcamps around the city and in Cambridge. In October of 2016, I became a full-time personal trainer at a women’s only gym where I would work for about two years. It was there where my love for working with women really became apparent. Empowering other women to be confident and strong was my passion.
I am now working full-time as a General Manager for corporate fitness, doing my personal training through my own brand, Brianne B Fitness and teaching group fitness classes through Boston Sports Club and BSC Lab. I have been leading “Lady Warrior Bootcamps” through Athleta since May 2017 and was recently invited to be a coach with MoveWith, a platform that allows trainers to publish their own audio workouts within their own digital studio. Now, women everywhere will be able to listen-in and workout with me no matter where they are.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. I don’t think anyone starting their own business would ever say it’s a smooth ride. Personal training at a commercial gym was a difficult road for me because of the exhausting work schedule – early mornings and late nights. My own health definitely suffered because I was always thinking about my clients and not about myself. I was always tired, eating whatever I could grab at the moment, and skipping my own workouts because I was either napping or programming during my breaks. Now, I always make sure to have enough time for my own personal workouts, sleep, and diet, because I can adjust my schedule as needed. It is easy to lose your sense of self-care when you are working in an industry where you are always focused on others. Now, I preach to my clients and to myself that in order to give everything you have to other people, you first have to take care of yourself.
I still hear “no” a lot, but I am actively building my social media following and growing my business. I really live by the adage, “if you don’t try, you’ll never know.” You definitely have to stay positive and keep pushing through.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Brianne B Fitness is a personal training, group fitness, and audio workout business. I am all about female empowerment and building confidence with moving well. I focus a lot on lifting weights and body weight exercises to achieve the client’s fitness goals. I emphasize correct form so people get the most out of their time exercising and stay injury-free. My goal with my clients is both movement and performance-based. I unlock their potential and show them what their bodies can do. They are always telling me, “I can’t do that,” but after some coaching and motivation they always come through.
I want any woman, no matter what size, or ability level, to always feel confident working out with my group or 1-on-1. My clients range from beginners to athletes. I pride myself on making workouts that are approachable for all ability levels. My style is definitely a bit more athletic-based. People know the work they are putting in which leaves them feeling accomplished after. I know some trainers method might be to shy away from making participants realize how hard they are working until afterwards but I believe in really focusing on their energy and pushing them through the burn every step of the way.
I have my next Lady Warriors Bootcamp coming up Sunday, July 29th at 9:30 a.m. at Athleta on Newbury St. and I will be launching my audio studio with MoveWith very soon!
What were you like growing up?
I was a ball of energy for sure. In the 5th grade, I remember I was crying to my mother that I couldn’t focus and I could not understand why I was always the last one done in school. After a visit to the doctor, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Growing up as someone with ADHD made me extremely self-conscious and I never thought that I would ever have success in school or a career. I was picked on a lot because I was loud, forgetful, and had a short attention span, which went along with my ADHD. Despite being self conscious, I was always very outgoing and genuine and always maintained an optimistic demeanor. I was fortunate to be supported by a wonderful family who were always there for me and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. My parents taught me to persevere and never give up and I still value those principles today.
In college, I was fortunate to meet a mentor who taught me everything there was to know about ADHD and with his help, I began to take control. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I really felt that I had a handle on my symptoms. I began to realize the upsides to my ADHD in that it brought high levels of energy, creativity, and positivity to my daily life, which are all valuable characteristics to a personal trainer.
