Meet Tin Can Sally aka Sally Seamans of Tin Can Sally in Gloucester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tin Can Sally aka Sally Seamans.

Tin Can Sally, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a sculptor whose work is made primarily of printed tin. I make whimsical and colorful tin creations under the name TIN CAN SALLY. Creating art has always been a part of my life – my mother was an elementary school art teacher and we always had oodles of art supplies!

I studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, Montserrat College of Art, the Decordova Museum and Sculpture Park and at Metalwerx. It has been said that the artist doesn’t chose the medium – the medium chooses the artist – and that is just what happened to me. Working with found printed tin is just plain a whole lot of fun! I use it to make tin bird and fish assemblages, collages, mobiles, jewelry, etc. Examples of the cans I use are olive oil, soy sauce, cookie, spice, tuna, coffee, tea, espresso, sardine, anchovy, tobacco, biscuit, mustard, curry, ethnic food, popcorn, sewing tins and more.

My work has been exhibited throughout New England in public buildings, schools, private collections and galleries. My work can be seen at Local Colors Artists’ Cooperative, 121 Main St., Gloucester, MA 01930 or at www.tincansally.net

Has it been a smooth road?
No matter what struggles I have encountered throughout my life – I always find complete joy, peace and abandonment in my studio.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am known as TIN CAN SALLY – not many know my real name – which I find great fun. There are not many sculptors / jewelers who work in tin. I love working in metal – and the fact that it is COLORFUL metal is the best.

My most proud accomplishment was a yearlong installation at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. It was titled FLOCK and included 386 birds of recycled tin. What a joy!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Cape Ann has been an inspiration for artists throughout the years. Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Stuart Davis, Milton Avery etc. etc. etc. The list is long. The place is inspiring.
