Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Nyman.
Daniel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up wanting to be a filmmaker. I was obsessed with the atmosphere and style of films like The Shining and Alien, and I wanted to convey the same sense of depressive dread that I felt watching them. I quickly learned though, after a brief film internship, that I did not have the patience for the behind the scenes work nor the ability to direct a group of people. Falling back to photography seemed natural and fitting. Over the years I dabbled in various styles but found my passion in music photography after shooting My Dying Bride at Maryland Death Fest. From then on I was hooked in capturing the music I love while trying to convey the moods and atmosphere it represents. These days I love shooting for both music and art. I never know how to gauge where I currently am, or where I am going, but I just keep doing what I enjoy and whatever happens.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For most people, no road is ever smooth. In art fields, you can find that many days are struggles. More often than not, the struggle is simply finding motivation. I’m a full-time artist, and although it grants me freedom and time a person just simply cannot have within a corporate environment, it is much more difficult to focus energy on working when you’re your own boss and so many emails go unresponded to or inquiries leading to dead ends. Much of what I do is for personal success, and the biggest hurdle is certainly combining business with art, as it tends to be for anyone in these types of fields. There’s a lot I can accomplish as an artist, but the further I progress, the more time and money it takes to maintain the quality I strive for. That alone becomes its own challenge.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Nyman Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I would say at this point my specialty is definitely in music photography (black metal and industrial genres specifically). I’ve shot a lot of various art styles over the years, but concerts have been what people began associating me with and what has given me the most networking opportunities. To me, what sets me apart and what I strive for is to interject the mood and atmosphere that the music is meant to portray. I rarely just take a shot, color correct it and post it. I try to emphasize both the show itself and the emotions being put forth.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am just continuing to move toward what I want and where I want to be. Other than that, I’m bad at having plans. Goals are one thing, but having a plan leaves too much room for undesirable change and let down.
