Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanna Guidone.
Suzanna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For as long as I remember I always loved the arts. As a kid, art classes were my absolute favorite and I would jump at any chance to create with whatever you put in front of me (LOTS of Mod Podge collages & friendship bracelets… where are my 90’s kids at?!)! I carried that same love with me through college with a minor in Visual Arts and concentration in Photography. Photography become a creative outlet for me, but I honestly never thought of it as a career until 2008. I was working for Nike in their Nike South corporate sales office in Miami Beach at the time. While Nike was an amazing company to be a part of, I knew my passion was not in sneaker sales (although I’d like to think I still have a pretty solid sneaker game to this day!). Yet, I found myself totally caught off guard when almost our entire office got laid off during the recession. At the time, it was devastating. But, looking back, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I finally had the time to think about what I wanted to do next. I invested a bunch of money from my severance into gear, started photographing all my friends, networking, and second shooting for other local photographer. Later that year, I moved back to Boston and started my business officially in 2009. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know that I would ever describe entrepreneurship as smooth sailing. There are so many highs and lows that come with owning and operating your own business. Especially in the wedding industry, I constantly have one foot in the here and now, shooting, photographing and working with 2018 clients, and one foot in 2019, bookings, networking and goal setting. The unknown has become a close friend of mine. Were buds now, so it’s cool. But, we weren’t always. Over the years, I have learned where my time is best spent, what I’m good at, what I’m great at and what to ask for help on. One of the hardest lessons I am still learning as a business owner is that it’s OK to take a break. Building something with you own to hands can be so intensely personal and it can be really hard to draw the line in the sand and know when to stop. When to not answer emails at 11pm or to take a personal day. There seems to always be that feeling that you should always be working or could do one more thing. But, I have learned that taking time for you and that refilling the creative tank is just as important (if not more!) than the grind. But, for all the crazy realities, I truly wouldn’t trade this dream for anything. It’s a roller coaster, but in the end, I love it.
Suzanna March Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in lifestyle wedding & portrait photography. I offer my clients a slightly different approach to weddings. An experience that makes you feel like a part of the team. One that is personal, comfortable, creative, unique, tailored to you and stress free. An experience built on mutual trust and a little bit of teamwork. Taking the time to get to know each of our couples and what is most important to them on their wedding day is something that is really important to me. So, I am most proud when our couples can let go, enjoy the day, take it all in and trust me to capture the rest. My couples would say that I have a calming presence and the ability to put people at ease and I’m am always there with a laugh!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Without a doubt that would my parents! I am so lucky to have two parents who were always there for me. They were at every single one of my games and school activities from when I was a kid all the way through college – and they even flew out to Chicago to cheer me and five of my friends run the Chicago Marathon in 2008!). They have always told me that I could be anything I wanted and given me unwavering support! They’re continue to be my biggest fans, push me to grow and try new things.
