Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Murphy.
Brian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I received my first guitar as a Christmas present when I was probably 12 years old. Throughout high school, I was in a couple different rock and metal bands and I ended up opening up for a few bigger nationally touring metal bands while I was in my mid to late teens.
Shortly after high school I was a session player for the punk/rock band 5 Star Loser which enabled me to meet all sorts of cool people and play in all sorts of cool places over the country, primarily Las Vegas and L.A.. This went on for several years. It was during that time I had started writing and recording a collection of songs for my own musical project and by the end of 2012/early 2013 I had formed the modern rock band One Time Mountain using the recordings I had made.
OTM has been together for almost 5 and a half years and we have opened up for a handful of national bands, Steven Tyler being the most notable and shout out to him because he is also in a Boston rock band. We had released several EP’s which had gotten us notoriety in the local scene. We’re coming up on the one year anniversary of our debut full-length album “Seasons” which is important to us because it was the beginning of a new chapter stylistically for us, having our awesome new singer Alex Nekrylau lay down the vocals. We’re extremely proud of what we have done for this record, and we supported it with a tour of the East Coast that I put together bringing over German band 7-Mazes along for the ride.
Currently, I am busy promoting “Seasons” with One Time Mountain, and practicing guitar trying to develop new skills I can use for our next record that we will begin writing this fall. Our next show is June 28th opening up for King’s X at The Met in RI, which we are looking forward to. I am also currently studying singing under Tony Harnell, who is a great vocal coach and considered a vocal legend by many.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One time, we were on tour and in South Carolina, our 30+ year old Van’s steering column went on us. Like, right as we got to the venue. We were blessed, the venue was great and they supplied all 9 of us (One Time Mountain and 7 Mazes) with our own hotel rooms and our van was fixed for us bright and early the next day. Just kidding, what actually happened was 9 guys had to sleep in a bunked-out conversion van using zero degree sleeping bags in the middle of January. That night, we also had to figure out a way to back the van up so our trailer door was against the venue wall, because we were also in a horrible part of town. It took the whole next day to fix and we ended up having to cancel a show we had near Virginia Beach. Stories like that are what rock ‘n roll is made of and like anything that is worth actually doing, it’s never easy. Lucky for us, Virginia isn’t going anywhere and we’ll be back.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about One Time Mountain – what should we know?
One Time Mountain is a rock band for people who just want to hear good rock music again. In general, we hear a lot of the same songs on the radio from the same artists and people are tired of that. We offer a fresh take on rock and we’re not afraid of having real guitar solos and great musicianship in a modern rock format.
As a band I would say we are most proud of “Seasons” which I encourage everyone reading to check out, you can hear it for free on YouTube with a simple search. I also love hearing when our songs help people get through personal problems, or when I find out about fans from countries far away that support us abroad. It validates what we are doing and makes it fun to keep doing.
