Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Page.
Haley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From a very young age, I had always had an interest in hair and makeup. I just always wanted to do costume makeup, dress up my little sister or dye my American Girl dolls hair with bleach and koolaid. Although that wasn’t entirely safe and I got punished every time, I just found at a young age, a talent I had for it. In high school, would do makeup for my cheerleading team during competition, my friend’s makeup for proms I wasn’t attending. Then, when I got to college, I still wasn’t sure if it was a hobby or something I wanted to continue as a career, but I kept getting calls from younger girls in the grade below me to do their prom stuff and a few people whose siblings wanted me to do their weddings. From there on, I realized this was something that was not a hobby anymore and each year, I was getting more and more clients. I definitely started with proms but primarily now just do weddings and photo shoots!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think since I decided to graduate from college and keep my full-time job while doing makeup part time it definitely helped me not struggle as much as other aspiring makeup artists. I was lucky enough that my bosses at my full-time job are super supportive in my makeup business and allow me to take off time as needed when it’s not a weekend job. I think the only struggle I have hit is believing in yourself and your work. A lot of times, I would be hard on myself and question if I was good enough or why I continued, but with an awesome support system and business growing every year, I learned that I am my hardest critic. The only advice I would have for younger women who are just starting their journey is to work hard. If you are not financially in the place to just have one job and makeup isn’t financially enough to support you, you can still grow a business on a time that works for you. As long as during any free time you have you are taking jobs, practicing and creating small project collaborations that will be beneficial to your business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I think what I get compliments about mostly and what you could say I am known for is doing very natural looking makeup. I always get told when I’m done that its the most makeup anyone has ever worn but it never looks cakey or too much. I really focus on the making you look like yourself still just a little enhanced. I never liked getting my makeup done and looking in the mirror and being horrified after because I looked like a completely different person! I think what sets me apart from others is I really take the time to get to know my client before doing their makeup, I ask a lot of questions to figure out what their style is. I’m always sure to ask what makeup they wear every day, so when I’m doing their makeup, I know what will make them feel most comfortable. Whereas, I feel some other makeup artist just go by the book and what is in style at the moment. For example, if I personally hate heavy bottom liner but that’s something my client wears every day, I will always make sure to put that on and then doing everything else that I feel will look best. Especially, when it comes to weddings and brides. You never want the focus to JUST be on your eyes or JUST lips, I want the focus to be on you as a whole.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My parents growing up were always really honest with me and never “babied” me I guess you could say? Which I’m so grateful for now because I think it just made me a really hard working driven person. My mom especially was always honest with me and my siblings of what we were capable of and wanting more. I think being the oldest it was definitely a little tougher on me but my mom would always say “I put so much pressure on you because I know you can handle it and do it!” Which at the time was stressful but she was right! I think her attitude and expectations really helped my work ethic and brought me to where I am today. I always in looking to do more, be better, and to be a better version of what my last goal was.
