Today we’d like to introduce you to Dina Martinez.
Dina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, I grew up watching my parents work hard every day. My father was an agriculturist and a grower. My mother was the sales person. Together they, sold their produce and, in the process created an immensely successful business. With a 5 grade education, it was inspiring g to see and feel.
Armed with the skills learned from my parents, I set off on the Naked Feet Yoga journey. After letting go of all my fears about opening my own business, I took night classes and free trainings, I read many books and worked every day and night tirelessly. At the same time I trusted the process of things and launched the studio in 2014.
Building a business has been a learning experience on all levels, from hiring teachers that fit with Naked Feet Yoga’s mission, to learning about marketing and finance.
13 teachers and 29 classes per week later, we are very happy to be part of the Melrose community and we embraced our neighboring towns.
My passion has grown even more and I feel deeply grateful to all communities that support Naked Fee Yoga, the love, look and feel of the studio it goes beyond yoga practice, Naked Feet Yoga offers a place of peace and calmness, a place where we are content and understanding, where we practice with our hearts not just our bodies.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t, knowing what works and how to find out if it’ll work was the challenge. Hiring the right teachers, having enough to cover the overhead cost. As a mother of a 20year old, it taught me to be very flexible and learn how to make time for family, friends and most importantly myself. It’s hard to separate yourself from your passions like Naked Feet Yoga is for me.
We are now expanding and trying to create a second plan for the downstairs, it has been challenging but it keeps me uplifted and again I am trusting the process of things.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Naked Feet Yoga – what should we know?
Oh great! This is where I can totally blow Naked Feet Yoga’s horn lol
Besides being a yoga teacher I also bring wellness and preventive medicine to my practice, as an IIN counselor I have created a combo of practices to offer at NFY.
Gratitude plays a huge part in my practices, and somehow that energy has been passed on to our sacred space. Everyone feels it. It has made NFY very unique, we offer yoga to heal and to get familiar with our bodies, to understand and embrace our limitations and continue to have a healthy and happy life.
I feel so proud to have very talented teachers, compassionate people who bring a little bit of who they are into their teaching. So fortunate!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes, there are a few.
My night classes at CWE (center for women and enterprise) Score in Boston had great mentors there.
Jerry Johnson from CWE worked with me even after the studio was open and continues to assist when needed. Thanks Jerry!
Harvard Business School was a massive help, most gratifying experience and so honored to have had the pleasure to work with the team.
Jean Henry a lovely woman who offered support in many ways, she is a student at NFY.
The Driscoll family, I couldn’t have asked for a more generous help, thank you always!
My dear friends Joan Glaser, Susan Bowers, Misty Sutton, Kathy Petrella, Mary Harrington, great supporters and
cheerleaders.
And definitely my mom!!! She reminded me often how to keep my mission going, asking me to eat because I was working nonstop, she is my hero!
