Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Gordon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up with a mom that owned a hair salon. She wasn’t a hair dresser but ran the business part of it, so I grew up basically in the salon. My senior year of high school, I started looking at college applications and realized the beauty industry was the only thing that interested me. After cosmetology school, I began working at my moms salon at 19 years old. I went through a weird phase when I was about 20/21 that I wasn’t entirely sure that being a stylist was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I moved to California for a little while and when I came back I took some time off from the salon. Eventually, I ended up back there. I slowly began building my clientele through social media and began to find the love and passion for cosmetology and makeup that I always hoped I would have one day. Today, I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else. I truly believe that this is what I was made to do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I feel like there are struggles with any journey that you choose to take. You have to make mistakes and learn from them. Social media has made the beauty industry so competitive and makes you feel as if you’ll never be good enough. You need to take a step back and remember why you began it in the first place.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into @beautyby_coley story. Tell us more about the business.
I have been a hairstylist for 8 years. I particularly specialize in Balayage, which I have grown such a love for over the last two years. I also identify as a makeup artist. I do a lot of weddings and have such a passion for special effects makeup. This is definitely what I’m most proud of. I’m not anywhere that I want to be yet but I’m still learning! Makeup is such an awesome way to express yourself and use your creativity.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Even though I grew up in the salon setting, I never actually thought that this was the path my life would take. I always had people saying that I would end up here because, of course, I was always messing with my dolls and barbies hair, but it wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I actually thought about it. Even starting cosmetology school, I wasn’t 100% sure that this was the road I wanted to take. I’m definitely glad that I did and am very happy about how far I’ve come.
