Slay N’ Glam is a Makeup Store & Studio located in Lynn, MA. When we opened the store we wanted to create something for our community that was convenient and affordable. So, we opened a store with products that are only available online. Most of our products are exclusive and not available at Sephora, nor Ulta. Not only do we sell exclusive products, we also sell it at a very affordable price. As well as selling makeup we offer Makeup Appointments for special occasions, prom, and weddings. We also offer makeup classes for either beginner, intermediate, and advanced, these makeup classes can either be a private one on one or a group class consisting of about 10-15 women. This year, we gave back to our community by offering free makeup and hair for senior girls in our community. Although we only do makeup, we partnered up with a few hair stylists in order to offer this to our community.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As the first makeup store and studio in Lynn, it was very hard to get approved by the brands we currently have. Since we were only 21 when we started, we did not have many resources, we had to go out and look for it ourselves. Even finding a business space who would approve of us was pretty hard. But we did everything in our power to make it happen. Right now, we successfully have about 19 brands. My advice to other women is, if you have a vision, follow that path. There is nothing better than loving what you do and your work ethic. And never doubt yourself, as it is the first step to fail. Confidence and commitment is the key!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Slay N’ Glam – what should we know?
I am a makeup artist and business owner. It’s so convenient for girls in our area to come to me because the location is easy to get to, and is affordable. I charge $50 for every makeup appointment whether it’s a full face glam or a “natural glam”. I like to do very different and vibrant colors sometimes because I constantly get inspired by Instagram makeup artists. I like to challenge and push myself to do makeup looks I’ve never done before because it is just great for improving my skills. My store is known for lashes, it is our hottest item. The only other place to get lashes in our area is pharmacies and Walmart, which don’t have as much as a variety as we do. Since the brands we offer in-store are online only, our customers do not have to pay for shipping, wait for their package, or worry about not getting their order on time, that is what sets us apart. So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel like as women we have many opportunities right now. Women are rising as you read this, whether it’s for makeup artists, fashion bloggers, hair stylists or even trainers. The social media platform is our greatest opportunity, even if we constantly get shamed for things like our bodies or our natural hair, take that as an opportunity.
