Life and Work with Melanie Cram

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Cram.

Melanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Right when I finished high school, I went off to cosmetology school at Paul Mitchel, and have loved the industry ever since. Since then, I’ve bounced around to a few salons to find the perfect fit for me. It’s so important to me to be surrounded by positive people, that’s why I love working at The Designory. It’s a second home to me! To stay on top of all the new techniques, I take hair classes all the time. Traveling for education makes this field so fun and amazing. I truly love what I do.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done because it has all brought me to where I am today. The beauty industry can be tough with all the drama that comes along with it, but when you find the right group of people to work with it makes it all worthwhile. For young women just starting out, I would say to just get as much education as you can, and always know your worth!

Please tell us about blondeand_boujee.
I specialize in blondes and all balayage techniques. Of course, I love doing all hair colors, but blondes are my calling! Which is why I chose blondeand_boujee for my Instagram name. I put my heart into not only my work but making each client feel special. I want everyone feeling beautiful and fabulous leaving my chair.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
A mentor doesn’t have to be just one person, I think it’s important to have other hairdressers to reach out to and vent to about salon problems. Finding hairdressers to follow on social media is so good for ideas and inspiration. I spend a lot of time looking at other people’s tricks and ideas. You can never get enough of that! A boss is also a great mentor, you should always want to work for someone that you look up to.
