Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan Killian.
Brendan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started painting as a teenager and have been making art ever since. In terms of subject matter, the most significant change came some twenty years ago during a residency program in Vermont. Until that point my work was centered on my personal experience, specifically the past. I began to think metaphorically and adopted “spokesmen” in the form of animal figures to address my thematic concerns and ascetic sensibilities. In the process, I inadvertently obtained some market success. In the preceding years I’ve created a diverse repertoire and built my business. In past five years my work has sold well enough that I am able to support myself with the proceeds.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth is overrated and frankly boring. As they say, and I sincerely believe, everything worthwhile involves some degree of difficulty. Without a doubt struggle and tension ultimately inform and add depth to my artwork. I’ve suffered the usual rejection, isolation and financial stress that seem to be the norm with most who endeavor to lead a creative life, but by far the toughest battle I’ve been fighting has been with my substance abuse. My life, let alone my art career, depends on some degree of success in this regard.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Brendan Killian Fine Art – what should we know?
I create small-scale oil paintings. My primary subject matter is sheep and various other animals. Most of my sales are through a local restaurant where my work has been on display for over 6 years. I’m most proud of the quality of the work, and the honesty and efficiency with which I conduct myself. I believe these attributes are an integral part of producing something you love and believe in wholeheartedly.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The lack of a middleman or vendor affords a level simplicity and satisfaction in terms of the interaction between my patrons and myself. As I tell them, their purchase goes directly back into the maintenance and growth of my business. In addition, I owe a great deal of my success to the proprietor and staff at “The Haven”, the restaurant where I display my work.
