Meet Melissa Peirce of Wellspring Nurse Source in Northshore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Peirce.

Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2001, I was working as a Technical Recruiter for an IT Staffing Company that had been bought by a foreign company that was looking to get established in the United States. At that time, my son was 6 months old and I was working remotely from home 3 days a week. I was concerned that the new company would not continue to allow me as much flexibility and was trying to figure out what I was going to do. I was catching up with a colleague, Amy Dain, who was working as a Sales Account Manager in the same industry and commuting over 3 hours a day between CT and NY. Amy was looking for a better work life balance herself so when I mentioned my dilemma, Amy suggested that we start our own company and that was the beginning of The Wellspring Group. I figured out how to file with the state and get incorporated, and we were off and running. I honestly had no idea what we were really getting ourselves into but we figured it out! I learned Quick Books, generated invoices, ran payroll, figured out the finances, and handled all HR issues in addition to doing the recruiting. It was a crazy time, but I found that I really love figuring out everything that needs to be done to get a company off the ground. Amy and I grew The Wellspring Group as much as we could by ourselves until 2003, when both of our husbands left their corporate jobs to come help us grow. I had just had our second child, and things had gotten to the point where I couldn’t handle all of the finances in addition to HR and Recruiting, and I just had too much on my plate. I handed the financial role off to my husband Jay when he joined. It was hard to relinquish control at first, but I quickly found that he did a much better job than I had done! Jay, Amy, Brian (Amy’s husband) and I continued to work and grow The Wellspring Group. We have weathered two recessions and numerous changes in the industry, while we have grown our families, and each moved to a new state.

In 2014, Amy met and became friends with Kelly Court. Kelly is a Registered Nurse. She started her career in the ER, and then moved into Case Management. Kelly looked at what our IT Staffing business and asked if we had thought about doing Nurse Staffing, and that was the first seed of Wellspring Nurse Source. Amy and Kelly researched what was needed to get a license to staff clinical people, and I helped out on the business end. Once we had Wellspring Nurse Source established, Amy and her husband Brian worked to get our first clients in North Carolina. When we had the clients and moved into the staffing phase, it was turned over to me and I set up the staffing and credentialing processes. The Wellspring Group was continuing to grow, and Amy and Brian were needed to keep that business moving forward while I was tasked with getting the Nurse Source up and running. Wellspring Nurse Source has grown quickly, and we now have a staff of a 4 Recruiters, an Account Manager, a Senior On-Boarding and Credentialing Specialist, and a Credentialing Assistant. Jay is our Finance Specialist, and I juggle all of the moving parts to keep us moving forward. Kelly has just joined us full time to help us manage the growth.

We are growing exponentially. It’s amazing to watch how much we’ve grown and changed over the past few years, and I know that we will again be a different company 3 years from now.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely NOT been a smooth road! The Wellspring Group has weathered two recessions where business got very lean for a while. It was scary as the business completely supported our families. I really had to dig deep, stay positive, and have faith. The desire for diversification came from the second recession, and ultimately led to our willingness to start the healthcare staffing business.

At the Nurse Source, we found the healthcare staffing was very different than technical staffing. There was so much to learn, in the beginning it felt like I was drinking from a fire hose. There was so much to do because we had to set up all of our systems and processes from scratch. We had some really long days in the beginning.

Looking back, I’m really grateful for all of the struggles. They all had a hand in shaping me and making me stronger. I’m an excellent problem solver, and I have an amazing ability to stay positive and look for the silver lining.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Wellspring Nurse Source – what should we know?
The Wellspring Group is a technical staffing company specializing in the placement of IT professionals in Contract and Contract to hire positions on a nationwide basis. We work best when we have the opportunity to work directly with the hiring manager and really understand the technical environment as well as the culture. We have long standing relationships and a history getting IT right… providing the right people with the right skillset and working within the company’s budget.

Wellspring Nurse Source is a healthcare staffing firm that places Nurses and Allied Healthcare Professionals in Travel Contracts across the country. We are very proud of the strong support system that we designed and put in place to take care of our Travelers so that they can take care of others. So many of the large company’s treat them like they’re just a number, and that is not the case here!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Personally, I am a lifelong learner and am on a continual quest for constant improvement. I recognize that things can go wrong at times, but always look to learn from past experiences and work to implement a new process to ensure that we’re not making the same mistakes twice.
