Today we’d like to introduce you to John DeMar.
John, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I came to Boston years ago to attend the Massachusetts College of Art. I encountered many fashionable, eclectic and what I thought were much more worldly people than myself having come from a small town. Fashion and styling soon drew me in and I had to become a part of it. Friends told me of the countless opportunities of my new found field, and I couldn’t wait to begin. Blaine hair school in Kenmore Square was the first stop. I absolutely loved it! While there, one of my fellow classmates told me of an assistant position opening up at the salon where he worked. Next thing you know I was walking down Newbury Street and had acquired my first job…apprenticing for Mario Russo.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I absolutely loved what I was doing now, although it was very hard work. Schedules of an apprentice can be quite trying, the days are extremely long with minimal breaks. When I found myself with a moment to relax, I was told to get on the floor to observe the other stylists work. I also found it extremely intimidating being surrounded by such seasoned stylists as well as the clientele.
How could I ever compete with their talents and style? The answer to that soon became quite apparent. Fortunately for me I had some of the best in the business to learn from. Some of them still by my side today. If it wasn’t for Mario, Tim, George and Helen, just to name a few, I would never have acquired the confidence and training that would prepare me for this industry.
Please tell us about Salon Mario Russo.
Cutting and coloring hair are my specialties. I love the process from beginning to end, the transformation. Having satisfied clients is what I strive for. If they’re not satisfied, neither am I. Everyone deserves the same attention to detail. Whether I am working on one of my clients that have followed me for years, or heading off to one of the local hotels to style a Saudi Arabian Princess, each and everyone deserve the same level of quality and satisfaction.
