Meet Sarah Trumbore of ST Studio in Chestnut Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Trumbore.

Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My mom is a residential interior designer and my step dad is an architect, owning his own firm in Boston for the last 25 years. I took my first interior design internship when I was in middle school and worked with my mom when I was in high school and college during summers off from school. It was just something I was naturally drawn to and luckily had the resources and familial guidance to pursue my passion. When I was little and we spent our summers in Maine, I would draw out floor plans in the sand at the beach and then invite people in when I had completed them for a tour of the house I had designed! When I moved to NYC after college I worked for a few high end residential design firms and received a degree from Parsons before opening my own firm in 2014.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a relatively smooth road for me. I feel working for other firms really helped alleviate any common design mistakes for when it was time to open my own firm. I got to see the behind the scenes of how to (and how not to!) run a business, handle clients, manage a project etc. A lot of companies start without any of that and are completely fine but I love research. The path I chose worked perfectly for me.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Clients contact me to help them create a cohesive beautiful home, one that works for their life and style. I specialize in high end interiors. I handle a lot of complete renovations and decoration of apartments and homes. I am known for really listening to my clients and being a bit strong willed in guiding them to the look I know is perfect for them. They always agree with me in the end! I have been doing this too long to let the clients take charge and make mistakes that I know they will regret later. They hire a designer for a reason. I am proud of the relationships I maintain with my clients, knowing they are happy in the home we have created. I stay in contact with all of them after their project has been completed. They reach out if they have acquired a new piece of art and want direction on framing or location. More often than not, they text me while they are art shopping! They will contact me for any design question really and sometimes just to chat, years after their home has been finished. It lets me know that it was a job well done.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I moved back to the area almost two years ago after spending 13 years in NYC. I am so delighted to be living back in Boston and feel so privileged to be working again in New England. I loved my time in NYC, it was a great high level learning experience with some of the top designers and residences in the design field. Boston just feels like home and where I am meant to be. I think there is so much opportunity here, so many new buildings going up in town and so many great restoration projects happening in Back Bay and the South End. The suburbs are endless with historic homes and with the close escape of the cape and the islands, opportunity abounds! Word of mouth is everything, one great project can lead to a lifetime of business.
